Catching Up on Leverage

The problem, for me, with good stuff is that I put it off until I have time to enjoy it. (Mediocre stuff, that’s easy to buzz through without having to pay full attention.) Soon, I’m several weeks/issues/episodes behind. On the plus side, that means I can give myself a mini-marathon. That’s how I found myself watching four episodes of Leverage and looking forward to more. The Stork Job A couple is trying to adopt a baby in Serbia, only to […]

Reviewers Can’t Win

I know, reviewing’s not that hard. You read or watch something, and then you say what you thought, being careful to include the basics — the premise, the creators, any special features that set it apart, the context of its place in genre or history if relevant — as well as explaining your points with enough clarity and examples that someone can figure out A) whether or not they share your tastes and B) whether or not they’d like it […]

Pluto: Urasawa x Tezuka Volume 1

Guest review by Ed Sizemore Gesicht is a robot and a detective for Europol. He’s been assigned to investigate three bizarre murders. The first is Mont Blanc, an internationally beloved Swiss robot, who was brutally slain while helping to control a forest fire. A few days later, North No. 2, a formidable military robot turned butler, is also destroyed. Then there is the murder of the human Bernard Lanke, a robot rights activist. Evidence at each crime scene connects the […]

Tokyopop in Trouble: More Cancellations, Including Aria

Well, that answers that question. I’m having a hard time finding Aria volume 4 because Tokyopop has given up on the series, along with others. Commenter Sebastian pointed out that Diamond’s latest cancellation list includes a number of just-solicited books. What’s Up With Tokyopop? New Book Unavailable

I like the Aria series, but I no longer preorder manga from any retailer. I want to be able to browse, and usually manga, since they’re in book format, are pretty easy to find. That wasn’t the case here. Aria volume 4 came out at the beginning of December. I had some credit with a mail-order retailer, so I asked them to send it to me, along with several other graphic novels, at the beginning of January. I just got […]

The All-New Super Friends Hour: Season One, Volume 2

Review by KC Carlson I pretty much stand alone from my comic book peers in their love for Super Friends. Me, I don’t really get it. Perhaps it’s because I’m a few years older than most of my comic friends. When these episodes of The All-New Super Friends Hour first aired in 1977, I was a junior in college and had pretty much stopped watching all TV (except for SNL and SCTV) since 1975. I had wrapped up my Saturday […]

Papillon Volume 2

Well, that was a twist. Volume 1 was about twin teens thinking they were in love with the same boy. Volume 2 heads off in a very different direction with all kinds of over-the-top events. Shy Ageha has just lost out on Ryusei to her twin sister Hana. That plot is quickly forgotten, though, as the strange guidance counselor Kyu-chan instead starts meddling in Ageha’s relationship with her mother. The parents raised Hana, you see, while Ageha was raised by […]

Diamond Sets Time Limit on Periodicals

As Matt High points out, lost in the news of Diamond Comic Distributors raising its minimum order level for publishers was this little tidbit: For comic book periodicals and magazines, retailers can only order these books for 60 days after their initial release. After 60 days, Diamond locks down the code and does not accept any more reorders. This may not affect brokered publishers, i.e. DC or Marvel, but as the two publishers driving Diamond sales, they’re setting the rules […]
