Owly: Tiny Tales

Owly: Tiny Tales is the perfect starting point for someone interested in trying this series of charming fables. The volume collects Andy Runton’s various short stories featuring the characters, so it’s perfect for browsing or dipping into. Four of the tales — “Splashin’ Around”, “Breakin’ the Ice”, “Helping Hands”, and “In a Fix!” — were previously published as giveaway comics for Free Comic Book Day. Others appeared in convention programs or anthology collections or minicomics. Because of the various sources, […]

Toon Books Wave 2: Mo & Jo, Jack and the Box, Stinky

I covered the first wave of Toon Books earlier this year. Now, the second wave of books are out, and here’s what I thought. As before, they’re each $12.95 US for 32-40 pages, hardcover, aimed at grades K-2. Mo and Jo Fighting Together Forever written by Jay Lynch; art by Dean Haspiel Hilarious! Mona and Joey are squabbling siblings. Through an elegantly quick turn of events, they wind up with a super-suit that they split in half, because they sure […]

2008 Isotope Award Contenders

This year’s winner of the Isotope Award For Excellence in Mini-Comics was Jonas Madden-Conner’s Ochre Ellipse. As I did last year, I thought I’d draw some attention to other worthwhile nominees. But first, some thoughts on … The Process How do you judge, from 88 minicomic submissions, just one to be recognized for excellence? Archie’s Message: We Stay the Same

Every month, Archie sends out its solicits. They usually try to come up with some theme to highlight some of the books. What is it for this month? The comfortable status quo. Here’s the press release, clearly targeting the older reader: Archie Comics have always inspired a sense of nostalgia in their readers. That’s because the company has always strived to keep the stories faithful to the fads and fashions of each decade in which they were published. It’s also […]

Tonoharu Part One

Tonoharu by Lars Martinson comes in a handsome hardcover, but the book doesn’t live up to the promise raised by its upscale presentation, because it ends before resolving key questions raised by its premise. Dan is an assistant English teacher in Japan, although he speaks very little of that country’s language. He’s miserable. He lives in a small town where the only other English-speakers are gossiped about as weirdos. He has too little to do and no inclination to find […]

Nana Volume 11

When people talk about cyber-cheating, or whether or not online communication counts as being unfaithful, they often focus on the acts. “Did you just talk as friends or did you fool around?” That’s the wrong approach. What matters is the person’s attitude. In this volume, you can tell from the first few panels of Hachi getting a text message from Nobu that she’s emotionally involved, even though all it says is, “How are you? I’d like to talk to you.” […]

Best of 2008: How Early Is Too Early?

Today I saw both Amazon’s Best of 2008 for Comics and Graphic Novels and Publishers Weekly’s (links no longer available). It’s barely November! Putting out a “best of” list ignores two months’ worth of publications, or 16% of the year. Maybe the publishing world is just getting ready for the holidays early. Although some are cheating, a little. The PW list includes the much-discussed Kramer’s Ergot 7, which has only just debuted at a convention and has yet to widely […]
