Cinderella Closet Volume 1

I didn’t expect to like another “schoolgirl has crush, gets a makeover, learns about life” manga, but the twists in Cinderella Closet volume 1 by Wakana Yanai kept me interested enough to want to read another volume. “Country mouse” Haruka came to Tokyo for university. She had dreams of romance and popularity but finds herself working hard at a cafe and no time to be cute or do anything else but study. A random encounter with an attractive young woman, […]

Can You Survive the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes?

Can You Survive the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes? combines the interactivity of a choose-your-own-path book with three classic Sherlock Holmes stories: “The Red-Headed League,” “The Speckled Band,” and to say the other would be giving things away. The reader gets to pretend to be Sherlock Holmes himself, which is fun, particularly as you can’t be too cautious. You’re told at the start that Moriarty may have sent you a case as a trap, but if you turn down too many, […]

Read a Manga Classic for Free

Manga Classics accurately adapt well-known books into the comic format, keeping the original language. They’ve done a bunch of great works, including several Shakespeare plays. If you want to sample one, they’ve put their version of Anne of Green Gables (the only authorized manga adaptation by the estate of Lucy Maud Montgomery) online for free! It’s adapted by Crystal S. Chan and Kuma Chan. The story is described as Siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert were planning to adopt an orphaned […]

The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies

I have just read a historical mystery that I adored! The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies stars Lady Augusta and her twin sister Julia and is set in Regency London. The two women are in their forties and unmarried, so everyone, particularly their officious brother, thinks they should be ignored. Instead, they wind up helping women who have no other option. They recover blackmail letters and set out to rescue a wife kept prisoner by her husband. Along the way, […]

Impossible People: A Completely Average Recovery Story

Julia Wertz’s latest autobiographical comic puts all the rest of them — Drinking at the Movies, Museum of Mistakes (to be rereleased next month), The Infinite Wait and Other Stories — into new context. Impossible People: A Completely Average Recovery Story is 300-plus pages of deceptively simply, impressively readable comics about her finally acknowledging her alcoholism and how she decided to change her life. Her journey isn’t always inspiring or straightforward, but it’s honest and relatable. Wertz starts the book […]

Crowdfunded Good Omens Graphic Novel Announced

As longer-term site readers know, I loved the Good Omens TV show. Season 2 now has a release date (July 28), and the latest news is that Neil Gaiman, the Terry Pratchett Estate, and Colleen Doran are creating a graphic novel version that will be crowd-funded via Kickstarter. Doran, a long-time co-creator of other projects with Gaiman, will be adapting and illustrating the work. She’s a great choice. Particularly since the characters aren’t being drawn as likenesses, as that would […]

Holmes Coming

I’m a fan of “Sherlock Holmes in the modern era” stories. I love the way they illustrate how the detective character is timeless while making entertainment out of the culture clash between the Victorian era and today. The latest version I’m aware of is the novel Holmes Coming, published at the end of 2022. Dr. Amy Winslow, through a complicated series of events, winds up being present when an earthquake awakens a crazy man from a steampunk laboratory. She takes […]

The four-issue miniseries, illustrated by Ismael Canales, funded through two rounds in fall 2020 and spring 2021.
