The hand-drawn Ponyo, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, tells of the story of a five-year-old boy and his magical goldfish, who becomes a girl. The film’s “star-studded voice cast” includes Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Liam Neeson, and Betty White, although the children are new voices Noah Lindsey Cyrus (Ponyo, the fish-girl) and Frankie Jonas (the boy).

Bonus features include new interviews with writer/director Hayao Miyazaki and featurettes on making the movie, including sound work.

Accompanying this release will be new two-disc special editions of the following, all list-priced at $29.99 US.

Each includes an introduction by Pixar head John Lasseter, a storyboard presentation of the film, and “The World of Ghibli”, an “imaginative interactive experience” of some kind. I wonder if this means new releases of Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle are planned for some later date?

I’m unsure, these et make them more like Howls and Spirited away-which already included those types of special feature-including a Lasseter Introduction. Though, they might re-release the sets with the new packaging.

Johanna writes:

Were those already 2-disc sets? Actually, from the press release I got, I wasn’t sure why two discs were needed with these. Maybe more details will be forthcoming later.

William George writes:

It seems like they’re putting put their kid-oriented stuff first.

Ian writes:

I’m really hoping they put something on the second disc besides storyboards, like they did the first time they released these. That was a cool idea, but I would have settled for a few scenes in stroryboard form and some commentary / making of features.

And how about a re-release of Princess Mononoke? With Miramax gone, couldn’t they slip it into the Disney line?

Johanna writes:

Oh, are these just repackagings of the earlier releases, then?

William: Good catch.

Thom writes:

Spirited Away and Howls were both 2 disc sets, I thought the others were singledisc sets…but that could just be a faulty memory on my part. :)

Ian writes:

All of the Studio Ghibli releases were originally 2 disc sets. These re-releases apparently have new material on the second disc.

Mark writes:

I’m surprised Disney are using that cover for My Neighbor Totoro. It has the girl who looks like Satsuki with pigtails. Miyazaki decided to split her into two girls before the movie went into production.

William George writes:

Maybe it’s Totoro’s other neighbor?
