Copyright, Creative Rights, and Comics: A Brief History

I put together this presentation as a brief overview of what copyright means. I cover some of the most famous copyright disputes in comic history, including Captain Marvel, Howard the Duck, and Miracleman, as well as work for hire, fair use, and whether to work with a publisher.

I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice, but I hope someone finds this helpful or interesting.

  • I’m self-publishing my first 92-page illustrated book for adults because at this stage in my career, it’s got to be the way I want it. Not the way the publisher wants it or the editor wants it. Me. It’s costing a small fortune and when undertaking such ventures you will find out who your real friends are. And aren’t. And that can be tough. But my mother always said that nothing worth having comes easy. So away we go!
