Choose Your Own Adventure: Forecast From Stonehenge

I had fond memories of the Choose Your Own Adventure books from childhood, so I was curious how well the stories translated to a comic. Not too bad, it turns out.

Choose Your Own Adventure: Forecast From Stonehenge feels like what I remember — a weird collection of endings, some of which kill you or are otherwise unpleasant, a few of which end positively, some of which are surprisingly non-specific.

The narrative logic is all over the place, but this is an adventure read. So visiting the land of the fairies or running though a wilderness at night or avoiding the police with a sacred artifact are all options. The book was adapted by Stephanie Phillips, based on the original by R.A. Montgomery, and illustrated by Dani Bolinho.

The art is straightforward, with a notable attempt to draw panels as though the reader is actually seeing the events. The protagonist’s features are often obscured, with the reader seeing the back of their head. They’re as non-specific as possible, with a hoodie, pants, and mid-length hair, allowing for greater reader identification.

I liked the fact that there was a map diagram in the back, where you can trace the various endings out of the fifteen possible. It’s not a memorable read, but it was nostalgic fun following the various options.

This is the third in the Oni Press line of Choose Your Own Adventure graphic novels, after Eighth Grade Witch and Journey Under the Sea.
