Pixar Not Nominated for Animated Oscar This Year

I found this Twitter thread informative for pointing out that Pixar’s Monsters University wasn’t nominated for the Animated Feature Film Academy Award this year. The nominees were Disney’s Frozen, Studio Ghibli’s The Wind Rises, DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods (a caveman picture that got mixed reviews), Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 2 (liked mostly for the little yellow Minions), and the imported underdog Ernest & Célestine. @siracusa Animated feature category aside, this appears to be the second Pixar movie to not be nominated […]

Superman/Batman Movie Delayed a Year

WB has announced that their Superman/Batman movie, the sequel to Man of Steel, will open in theaters May 6, 2016, instead of the previous July 2015 date planned. Henry Cavill continues as Superman, while Ben Affleck takes on the role of Batman and Gal Gadot joins as the much-anticipated Wonder Woman. The studio’s explanation is that they are “allowing the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story”. Moving the Superman/Batman film puts […]

My Favorite Comic Story of All

(The below was written for the 2011 Team Cul de Sac benefit zine created to raise funds for research into Parkinson’s Disease. It was assembled by Craig Fischer with the question “what is your favorite comic (comic book, comic strip, graphic novel, whatever), and why?”) I can just about guarantee that my favorite comic isn’t shared by many others. In fact, I’m often surprised to find out that anyone’s heard of it. My favorite comic is “Hukka vs. the Bob!” […]

Wolverine vs. Sabretooth: The Marvel Knights Animation Motion Comic

Out tomorrow is the latest Marvel Knights motion comic release from Shout! Factory, Wolverine vs. Sabretooth. I tried to watch it, I did. But I don’t like Jeph Loeb’s writing. I didn’t like the prehistoric werewolf opening or watching bloody scenes of disembowelment while the narrator, Wolverine, says things to himself like “Having spent the better part of my life with no real certainty who I was or where I came from. And no, it wasn’t the beer. Suddenly, I […]

Happy Marriage?! Volumes 2-3

Boy, am I glad I read these volumes together, because if I’d read just volume 2 alone, I would have thrown it across the room and refused to continue. But volume 3 provides some much-need forward motion to the story after the second volume’s continued reliance on having the characters refuse to talk to each other to maintain artificial suspense. As established in the first volume, Chiwa has married Hokuto in order to pay off her father’s debts. She doesn’t […]
