The Elwell Enigma

The Elwell Enigma, Rick Geary’s Kickstarted graphic novel, is exactly what I expected, fitting in nicely with his previous murder stories. The differences are minimal, although noticeable if you’re looking for them: This book is slimmer, 48 pages instead of 80 or so. It’s a self-covered hardcover, without a dust jacket. The paper stock is thinner, although nice and white. When examined very closely, the lettering is a little bit fuzzy. (I only noticed because I was reading the book […]

Woman Rebel: The Margaret Sanger Story

At first thought, the biography seems like an easy format to do as a comic. Just portray the family and background, select some key incidents, and you’re done. Except when you’re telling the story of Margaret Sanger, birth-control pioneer. Her life was so unique, fiery, and jam-packed with events that it’s hard to summarize it. Woman Rebel is a stunning read, an inspiring look back at a fight against ignorance and for women’s self-determination. Plus, author Peter Bagge made the […]

Thor: The Dark World Encouraging Science for Girls

The Marvel Comics branch of the Disney empire has had its issues in the past welcoming women, but the movie arm seems to realize that you don’t get great success without reaching out to everyone. Specifically, to promote Thor: The Dark World, opening November 8, they’re encouraging girls to think about careers in science and technology. As a tie-in with the Thor movie character of Jane Foster (who, as played by Natalie Portman, has been updated from a nurse to […]

Manga Fans, Your Dream Job Is Hiring

Which manga fan hasn’t dreamed of helping bring books they love to the US market? Kodansha Comics is currently hiring (on a one-year contract) a manga editor. Note that in addition to the usual skills — multitasking, good communication, able to meet schedules — you must be able to read Japanese. But please note a few caveats: There was a similar job posting a year ago. I don’t know if that person didn’t work out, or they’re expanding — I […]

Arrow: The Complete First Season

Fans of the comic know the backstory, although it takes on new immediacy seeing it on TV. Young billionaire Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) has been shipwrecked on a deserted island for five years. After he’s rescued, with the skills he learned to survive, he’s determined to bring justice to Starling City to make up for his father’s corruption. He roams the streets as a mysterious hooded vigilante, taking down criminals among the rich 1% (making for a timely undercurrent, that […]

Masters of Sex Debuts on Showtime Tonight — Recommended!

Just watched Masters of Sex on Showtime on Demand, and it was great — funny, revelatory, fascinating, and thought-provoking. Attitudes about sex in 1956 were restrained, as you’d expect, which made Dr. William Masters’ work exploring the physical reactions to intercourse and orgasm all the more surprising. Virginia (“Ginny”) Johnson was his secretary, later his partner in this groundbreaking research into human sexuality. Masters of Sex explores their work and personalities. Masters is restrained (with ego-driven deception when it comes […]

Batman: The Brave and the Bold Coming to Blu-ray Through Warner Archive

Coming in November, Warner Archive will be releasing Batman: The Brave and the Bold, my favorite superhero cartoon, on Blu-ray. The first collection will include the 26 episodes of season one, previously released on two DVD volumes. This is Warner Archive’s first animated Blu-ray release. Batman: The Brave and the Bold was a wonderful, fun treatment of superheroics with plenty of guest stars and creative storylines. It’s truly entertaining for all ages. Warner will be announcing more details on a […]
