Creator of Blue Is the Warmest Color Graphic Novel Criticizes Movie Version

At the Cannes Film Festival last month, the winner of the top prize, the Palme d’Or, was a French lesbian romance called Blue Is the Warmest Color. Turns out that it’s based on a graphic novel by Julie Maroh (which will be published in English this fall by Arsenal Pulp Press), making it the first film based on a comic to win the prestigious award. According to the NY Times, the movie was “celebrated for its explicit sex scenes”, which […]

Archie Comics and Warner Bros. Team for Archie Movie

Warner Bros. and Archie Comics are teaming up for a live-action feature film version of Archie, to be directed by Jason Moore, who did a great job on Pitch Perfect. The movie will be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who’s been working on Glee but has a long comic history writing for Marvel as well as penning the recent Archie Meets Glee comic storyline. The news broke at Deadline.com, which is perhaps taking its name too seriously in speculating that the […]

Blue Morning

SuBLime Manga prints yaoi and boys’ love titles, and although almost all of their books are Mature rated, the actual amount of sexual content can vary widely among stories. Blue Morning turns out to be one of the books in the “not very much physical contact” category, which was fine by me, since I’d rather read about the emotions and relationships than watch scenes of the act. (However, please note: the one sex scene can be read as non-consensual, although […]

SuBLime Manga Republishing Yaoi Titles From Defunct Publishers

I haven’t seen any official notice of this, so maybe everyone already knows and I just missed a press release, but while browsing the list of SuBLime Manga yaoi books at their website, I started noticing some familiar titles. All had one thing in common: a description that said “This volume was produced as a direct-to-Kindle release from Japan. Please enjoy!” I’m not sure what that means, or whether they’re available to non-Kindle readers, but all of these titles were […]

Tamara Drewe (The Movie)

I finally got a chance to see the 2010 movie adaptation of Posy Simmonds’ graphic novel Tamara Drewe, and it was wonderful. Tamara Drewe (the movie) is a very British romantic comedy with a sprawling, talented cast and good observations about human nature. And writers. Roger Allam is a best-selling novelist cheating on his wife (well-played by Tamsin Greig, whom I knew from Black Books), who without thanks runs a writers’ retreat out of their farm home. Gemma Arterton stars […]

Justice League Products for Kids at Target

After noticing the huge Justice League at Target promotion ad spread for summer products in the last Entertainment Weekly magazine, I had to stop by and check out what they had. The press materials make a big deal out of “inspired by the new 52”, but the images, when used, are clearly the traditional José Luis García-López figures. (He did the look book full of samples well-known for their classic styling.) Here’s a serving tray, for example. It’s nice to […]

Monsters University Clips

Disney has released three new clips from Monsters University, the Pixar movie sequel that opens in three weeks on June 21. My favorite was this one, which shows Nathan Fillion’s obnoxious frat boy character Johnny Worthington (of Roar Omega Roar) recruiting Sulley (John Goodman) while brushing aside Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal). Fillion does smarmy voices well. We also get to see roommates Sulley and Wazowski meeting over a stolen mascot: And their (interrupted) fraternity initiation:

The Strange Tale of Panorama Island

I’m not sure where to start in describing this historical erotic fantasy manga. The Strange Tale of Panorama Island is for adults, certainly, with a bunch of (mostly female) nudes. It’s been anticipated since its announcement in 2009. That article gives some important basics that take on new context after reading. It’s true, the book is reminiscent of The Great Gatsby… if Gatsby were a Lovecraft character, willing to work out all the details of faking a death in order […]
