Genshiken Sequel Series Coming to US This Fall

ANN is reporting that Kodansha will release the first book of Genshiken: Second Season in the U.S. on September 4. (There have been two volumes out so far in Japan.) It took me a couple of tries to appreciate the fan-favorite series, about an anime/manga/cosplay/videogame club, before I got the appeal, but once you know the characters, it’s a lot of fun. The first series ran nine volumes (published by Del Rey), ending with graduation. To prepare for the sequel, […]

Bakuman Volume 9

As with any addiction, sometimes I’m afraid to talk about the hold Bakuman has on me. I called the series one of my Best Manga of 2011, due to how much I enjoy and anticipate reading it, but I well know that it also has flaws, mostly relating to its horribly cardboard female characters. Still, I look forward to each new volume with great gusto, since I love following the struggles of the manga artists and the details revealed about […]

UltraViolet Digital Copies on Sale: Movie Companies Continue to Overvalue Their Product

When the UltraViolet program was first announced, one of its goals was to give studios a way to sell digital versions of movies direct to customers, without having to use iTunes. The aim of the program is “digital portability”, which they believe will convince customers to buy instead of rent. Not at these prices, it won’t. Paramount opened its direct sales site, ParamountMovies.com. There, more than 60 recent and classic movies are priced from $12.99 – $22.99, depending on age […]

Drama Cover Revealed; Telgemeier’s Followup to Smile

Raina Telgemeier (author of Smile, one of the best graphic novels of 2010) has released this cover to her next book, Drama. Due in September 2012 from Scholastic, Drama involves theater geeks working stage crew in middle school. What a great title! And I love that strong purple. Update: The book is now available at Amazon with this description: Callie loves theater. And while she would totally try out for her middle school’s production of Moon Over Mississippi, she’s a […]

The Secret World of Arrietty Out Next Month

On February 17, Disney will release the newest Studio Ghibli movie: The Secret World of Arrietty. Here’s the trailer: As pointed out, this is based on the classic series of novels that began with The Borrowers by Mary Norton, about a family of little people who live in the walls of houses and live off items “borrowed” from the Big People. It’s a wonderful choice for a cartoon, since animation allows the various-sized characters to interact realistically without a layer […]

Kate Beaton Draws Reading

Kate Beaton (Hark! A Vagrant) writes and draws about her reading style for The Globe and Mail. (Via Tom Spurgeon.) This illustration shows both her facility for capturing movement beautifully and her own twitchy poses. I can relate, especially that last one with the little stars. Ah, iconic cartoon language!
