Friends of Lulu Future Uncertain as President Resigns Publicly

Following up on yesterday’s news that voting was open for the Friends of Lulu Awards, the current organization President, Valerie D’Orazio, has announced on her blog (link no longer available) that she’s leaving the group at the end of the year. This is not much of a surprise — her fatigue has been obvious since the end of July, when she first began talking publicly about her tenure as the group’s leader over the past three years and the problems […]

It’s Award Time! Submit Isotope Minis, Vote Women (My FoL Award Suggestions)

The Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics Submissions for the 2010 Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini-Comics are due by October 1. I saw a ton of excellent possibilities at SPX this past weekend, so I hope at least some folks will send in their publications for consideration. Note that you must be present at the store ceremony on October 16 to win (same time and city as APE), although the winner is contacted in advance to make that happen. […]

Chi’s Sweet Home Volume 2

Thanks to a gift from fellow reviewer Ed Sizemore, even though I didn’t like the first book of Chi’s Sweet Home, I read the second by Konami Kanata. And everything I disliked about the previous volume had been fixed! This book was the “cute cat doing cute things” comic I’d come to expect from hearing others praise it. All of the out-of-place depressing “I miss my mom” stuff was gone. The overdone lisp in the cat’s internal voice had been […]

Fantasia / Fantasia 2000 Double Disc Edition Announced

Due out November 30 is the re-release of Fantasia, Disney’s collection of animated classical music videos, in a special edition with its companion remake (with different musical pieces), Fantasia 2000. The Blu-ray is definitely the edition to get, since it comes with four discs (each movie on both Blu-ray and DVD) at a price difference of only $6. The list price is $46, while the two-disc DVD edition is $40. At Amazon right now, the price difference shrinks even further, […]

Interview With Colleen Doran on the Business of Being a Comic Artist

I’m honored that noted comic artist Colleen Doran agreed to take the time to answer my questions. Her lengthy experience as a freelance illustrator and her outspokenness about problems that can occur in the comic business make her someone I admire. I spoke with her via email about how to manage a career as an independent artist and advice for aspiring creators. She discusses how to stay flexible and how she’s managed the many changes in the industry over the […]

Interview With Ed Asner, Granny Goodness in Superman/Batman Apocalypse

I don’t always run the interviews Warner Home Video sends out to promote their original DC animated movies, but I’m posting this one because I happen to think that Ed Asner as Granny Goodness is the most genius piece of voice casting ever. He originally played her in four episodes of Superman: The Animated Series and two episodes of the various incarnations of the Justice League cartoon. He’ll be continuing the role, described as “the primary henchwoman for the evil […]

IRS Says Friends of Lulu in Danger of Losing Tax-Exempt Status

As I feared, Friends of Lulu is in danger of losing its tax-exempt status as a charitable organization. At the end of June, the IRS released a “List of Organizations at Risk of Automatic Revocation of Tax-Exempt Status”, and as shown here, Friends of Lulu is on it. (Click for bigger version. Link no longer available.) That’s an excerpt from the NY list posted by the IRS. As described, “the list includes organizations for which the IRS does not have […]
