Doubt Volume 2

I recommend reading this second and concluding volume close to finishing the first. If you don’t, you might have forgotten who’s who and who’s dead. (A “story so far” or character list page would have helped me a lot in recalling where we left off.) I can’t imagine what it would have been like to read this in monthly serialization. It doesn’t really matter, though, since there are a number of reversals. This isn’t a mystery you can figure out, […]

Midnight Secretary Volume 1

When I sampled the first of Viz’s new mature shojo titles, Happy Marriage?!, I didn’t care much for it. I’m pleased to say that Midnight Secretary by Tomu Ohmi is much more enjoyable (and with a lead that didn’t annoy me nearly as much). The Midnight Secretary is Kaya, a professional executive assistant adjusting to her new boss. She wears glasses and a severe hairstyle because her normal look is too young and cute for her responsibilities. This reminded me […]

Utsubora: The Story of a Novelist

Utsubora: The Story of a Novelist by Asumiko Nakamura is a visually striking puzzle of a story playing with parallelism. Shun Mizorogi is a noted author who, after a number of years blocked, has recently begun publishing again (a story called Utsubora, just as this one is). He’s also taken up with a beautiful young woman named Aki. At the beginning of the story, he’s just gotten a call from the police; Aki has jumped off a building and been […]

The Twin Knights

After releasing the historically important shojo manga Princess Knight by Osamu Tezuka, two years later Vertical brings out the sequel, The Twin Knights. It’s just as wacky and action-packed as its predecessor, and it has the same Disneyesque look. And just as before, there’s a cross-dressing princess. Princess Sapphire, the hero of Princess Knight, is now Queen of Silverland, and she’s just given birth to twins. However, the court nobles are already fighting about whether Princess Violetta or Prince Daisy […]

Doubt Volume 1

Since I’ve been reading one “kill them off one by one” video-game-in-real-world title, I figured I’d try another. Doubt by Yoshiki Tonogai has the appeal of depending more on suspense, less on gory decadence. I’ve actually played a card game similar to the premise here, although in the manga, it’s done with cell phones for that modern touch. It’s called “Rabbit Doubt”. The setup is that there’s a group of “rabbits”, only one of them is secretly a wolf. The […]

BTOOOM! Volume 2

This series has gotten some (deserved) flak for its treatment of women as visual fan service, and I can’t disagree — heck, just look at that cover — yet I’m still reading it when I want adrenaline-teasing escapism that requires no thought. The premise hasn’t changed from the first volume by Junya Inoue. We’re watching people stuck on an island blowing each other up, since only one can survive. There’s a lot of wallowing in violence and abuse, in order […]

GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class Volume 5

Normally, starting a manga title with the fifth book in the series would be a recipe for disaster, but GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class is easy to jump into, since it’s a collection of four-panel (4-koma) strips. It’s also very approachable, with a cast consisting of art school students. Although I had no idea who the individual girls were, the situations and gags were still funny and touching. The jokes resolve around two main subjects: making art and summer. At […]

Happy Marriage?! Volume 1

I wasn’t going to talk about Happy Marriage?! volume 1 by Maki Enjoji, because it’s slow, boring, and repetitive, but then I saw this review. Now, certainly, everyone is entitled to her opinion, but I couldn’t let the sentence, “Happy Marriage?! won’t disappoint josei fans looking for a new series to follow” stand without providing a counterpoint. I very much would like more josei manga available here, but not titles like this, and I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to any […]
