Whiteout Bonus Features Blu-Ray Only

Got the ad for the upcoming Whiteout DVD and Blu-ray today, and I was disappointed to see that the bonus features, for the most part, were only announced for the Blu-ray version. The film wasn’t very good, but I was still interested in seeing the featurette discussing the graphic novel and its trip to film, especially what artist Steve Lieber had to say. However, these special features are described as “exclusive to Blu-ray”: The Coldest Thriller Ever Story — Kate […]

Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1960s Volume 2 and 1970s Volume 2

Review by KC Carlson I was very pleased to see another go-round of Warner’s Saturday Morning Cartoons compilations. They make very interesting samplers of what was happening in kid-vid in both the 1960s and 1970s, so they’re prime fare for baby boomers like me. Although you have to keep in mind that it’s not a complete snapshot of the era. Due to licensing restrictions (or possibly availability), the selections are pretty much limited to properties that Warner currently controls, represented […]

Justice League: The Complete Series

Review by KC Carlson Out today is Justice League: The Complete Series, and I can’t think of a better gift for any superheroic animation fan — even if it’s a gift that you give yourself. The set features all 91 episodes of both Justice League and Justice League Unlimited on 14 DVDs, plus ALL the Special Features that appeared on the previous DVD collections — all wrapped up in a nifty collector’s tin. Plus there’s a bonus 15th disc, featuring […]

Condorman

I was thrilled to discover that Disney had made Condorman available on DVD. I got mine by cashing in Disney Movie Rewards points, or apparently you can get it through their Disney Movie Club (a subscription service). I have fond memories of this 1981 goofy superhero/spy spoof. It stars Michael Crawford, who went on to greater fame as the original musical Phantom of the Opera, and Oliver Reed as the Russian baddy. Crawford is Woody Wilkins, a comic artist and […]

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies

Review by KC Carlson Reasonably faithful to the original source material, the new Superman/Batman: Public Enemies animated feature plays much better than some of the recent DCU animated films but still has some problems in both animation quality and story. Based on the opening salvo in DC’s Superman/Batman comic book (the story arc was originally called “The World’s Finest” in tribute to the long-running comic that the original Superman and Batman team-ups appeared in), the six-issue comic story was a […]

Surrogates

I enjoyed Surrogates, the science-fiction thriller starring Bruce Willis, more than I expected, and I’m glad I saw it. I even enjoyed it more than the graphic novel it was based on. That’s because I was always more involved in the cultural and societal changes than the murder mystery. It was easier to see how the world was different (and yet similar) on the screen instead of on the page. Although I appreciated the ways they changed the plot in […]

Nana (Anime Uncut Box Set 1)

The story of two young women named Nana moving to Tokyo as their adult lives begin, previously a manga series and a feature film, here is retold as a series of anime episodes. The two Nanas meet by accident on the train and then fall into becoming roommates. One Nana is a tough rock chick, coming to the big city to form a band and succeed at music; the other is following a guy, because she doesn’t know what to […]
