Young Justice Creator Responds to Criticism — Boys Are Tradition

Via DC Women Kicking Ass comes a link to Greg Weisman’s response to fans who criticized Young Justice‘s premiere for being so boy-heavy. A fan wrote in: I expect that the women will have a lot more to do in the episodes to come, but I still find it profoundly problematic to introduce the characters in such an unequal manner. I believe there are too many men in the world as it is who see women as mere supporting players […]

Don’t Cartoon Makers Have Daughters? Thoughts on Young Justice

I watched the Young Justice cartoon pilot over Thanksgiving weekend. My reaction was very similar to Anika’s daughter’s, written about in depth here: “Where are the girls?” Well, with about five minutes to go [in the hour-long show], three female characters finally did show up: Wonder Woman, silently speaking in a background shot; Black Canary, who was introduced as the team’s main trainer — but also stood silently for it; and Miss Martian, the fifth member of the team, who […]

CMX Shutdown Reactions

In the wake of yesterday’s news that DC is shutting down CMX, a variety of reactions hit the internet. Here are some of the strongest and smartest. David Welsh reviews DC Comics’ history of forgetting that it had a manga imprint. When Diane Nelson took over for Levitz, it surprised absolutely no one that CMX was not among her talking points, probably because DC didn’t have the right to repackage CMX properties in other media, so who cares? We need […]

The Losers Get Lucky

Review by Caroline Pruett If you want to see a future cult classic right now, skip the big summer blockbusters and check out The Losers — assuming you can find it. This movie opened weakly at the box office, drowning in a glut of similar-sounding films. A lot of comics fans knew it because the film, directed by Sylvain White, is based on a series created by Andy Diggle and Jock and published by Vertigo (more on that below). But […]

Audience, Fans, and Marketing to Women

The question, “what audience do superhero comics aim for?”, has been of much discussion (at least, around my house) this week. Brian Hibbs, after telling an adorable story about his son making a Leprechaun Trap, starts things off pondering what kind of entertainment is suitable for his 7-year-old. despite the perhaps foolish nature of some of [Buddy Saunders’] complaints, a tremendous amount of what he said ended up coming reasonably true — “mainstream” superhero comics are really unacceptable for kids […]

Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1960s Volume 2 and 1970s Volume 2

Review by KC Carlson I was very pleased to see another go-round of Warner’s Saturday Morning Cartoons compilations. They make very interesting samplers of what was happening in kid-vid in both the 1960s and 1970s, so they’re prime fare for baby boomers like me. Although you have to keep in mind that it’s not a complete snapshot of the era. Due to licensing restrictions (or possibly availability), the selections are pretty much limited to properties that Warner currently controls, represented […]

What Is Zuda Looking For?

I thought I’d stop by and check out this month’s Zuda entries, which made me wonder about how similar they were all becoming. I noticed that many of them were tagged either Super-Hero, Action/Adventure, or Horror. There were smart-alec animals, girls in their underwear, bloody fights, talky conspiracies, and always, too much time spent waiting for the viewer to load. The content reminded me of what I can already get elsewhere. Also typical: lots of setup, no real story. With […]

Saturday Morning Cartoons: 1960s Volume 1

Review by KC Carlson In preparation for watching this excellent idea for a cartoon set, I made sure I went to bed the night before wearing my footie pajamas (the ones with the penguins), got up really really early, trudged downstairs with my blanket and pillow in the dark to spread out on the floor in front of the TV, made myself a big bowl of cereal (Rats! No Fruit Loops or Cocoa Krispies!) — making sure to bring the […]
