The Legend of Bold Riley #1

The Legend of Bold Riley was a 2012 graphic novel fantasy about a royal seeker of adventure and beautiful girls… only the seeker was a woman. Now Riley is back in a comic book series with the same title written by Leia Weathington and drawn by Jonathon Dalton. Given the series’ episodic approach to storytelling and use of different artists, it fits better, in my opinion, in issues instead of thick books. This first issue, “The Talking Bone”, is drawn […]

BTOOOM! Volume 6

I’ve known from the beginning of this series by Junya Inoue that it was a very guilty pleasure. Heck, I was noting how sexist it was back with volume 2. Yet I enjoyed the action and premise, of video gamers forced to kill for real on a deserted island in a live-action version of the game. It was stupid at times, but what did I expect from mindless escapism? It took me a while, but volume 6 finally turned me […]

The Importance of Appearance in a Visual Fandom

Sean Kleefeld has an intriguing post about how difficult it can be for women to pick the right outfit for a geek event: they can’t dress too nice when going to a comic shop because then they get comments questioning their fan status. The whole “fake geek girl” bullshit. They can’t dress too slummy either because then they get mistaken for part of a bad crowd, and their fan status is questioned from the other direction. They also can’t show […]

Wizard World Announces Expanded Schedule for 2015 With Nine New Shows

Wizard World is really expanding next year. They have announced locations and dates for “a minimum of” (so there might be more) 22 shows in 2015, with nine new cities — San Jose, Fort Lauderdale, Cleveland, Raleigh, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Des Moines, Madison, and Greenville — and a Horror Fest show. (I’ve already mentioned the Madison plans, which is now my local.) That’s up from 16 this year. They also note, “Additional cities (new and returning) may also be added […]

Real-Life Wacky Racers

Do you remember the Wacky Races cartoon show? If not, here’s the opening, that shows all the various drivers and their odd concept cars. Now, check out this ad for the Peugeot 208, with real-life versions of a lot of the same vehicles. We didn’t get the lumberjack and the beaver or the hillbilly and the bear — animals are hard to work with — but I’m astounded at all the others. That’s not my favorite recent nostalgia car ad, […]

Sabrina Coming Back to Comics

Afterlife With Archie has been a smashing success for the publisher, so they’re expanding their horror line with a Sabrina comic relaunch, coming in October according to USA Today. It’ll be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also writes Afterlife, although this one is described as darker than that. Artist Robert Hack says, “Sabrina takes characters we know and love and pushes them in a new, ghastly direction.” So, not necessarily a comic for me, then. I don’t look forward to […]
