Justice League: War (Blu-ray Review)

Justice League: War is the first “new 52” DC original animated movie, and although I don’t care for those relaunched comics, I found the story of the Justice League first assembling kind of fun. It’s fast-paced, with plenty of suspense and excitement. Instead of wondering “when is this gonna be done?”, as I have with some of the past DC movies, this kept my interest, with the exception of the lengthy battle finale. It starts with Batman (voiced by Jason […]

Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Lost at Sea Gets Anniversary Reissue

I love Lost at Sea, Bryan Lee O’Malley’s first graphic novel. Before the Scott Pilgrim juggernaut, this was a weird (but affecting) story about a depressed girl on a road trip who wasn’t sure she had any friends and who was being followed by cats. I reread it just now to be sure, and yes, it was still great. Quietly odd and slowly mood-changing, as you’re drawn into Raleigh’s confusion and mental uncertainty. Characters you want to spend time with, […]

BTOOOM! Volume 5

I thought BTOOOM! volume 4 was a bit slow and repetitive, but this volume (out next month) kicks it all back up into high gear. We open with the story of how Himiko (the previously unnamed eye candy on the cover) came to the island and her experiences before meeting Ryouta. Given her hatred and distrust of men, it’s not surprising to see that it’s a tale full of attempted rape. In fact, her “origin” is something like Red Sonja’s: […]

Goodbye, Greg, for Now

Another old-school writer-about-comics calls a halt, demonstrating that this reviewing thing is hard when you also have an adult life and responsibilities. (That’s not a crack — it’s just that one’s time is much more one’s own while in school or just out of it.) Greg McElhatton has posted a farewell at his site, Read About Comics. As he points out, it’s really just acknowledging reality — he hasn’t updated with new reviews in five months, since he’s busy with […]

Agents of SHIELD Takes Jump in Filesharing — ABC’s Policy Outdated?

Interesting example they use in this analysis of ABC’s online streaming policy. Basically, the channel has decided to enforce a delay. Previously, ABC shows were available to watch online for free (through Hulu or ABC.com) the day after they aired. Now, it’s a week. While the studio likely wants to drive customers to pay outlets, the end result is that viewers are turning to free but non-legal methods. Easy availability is key, and promptly. So, for example, when it comes […]

Sherlock Bones Volume 3

What if Sherlock Holmes were reincarnated as an adorable puppy dog? That ran around with a pipe in his mouth because that’s the only way he could magically communicate? And only with Takeru, his Watson, because the pipe was a family heirloom? It would make for fun and cute mysteries, that’s what. Sherlock Bones is a light-hearted romp written by Yuma Ando and drawn by Yuki Sato. The series is actually short on deduction — the reader sees the crime […]
