Marvel Discovers Comics Are Periodicals and the Problem of Variant Covers

A couple of weeks ago, Marvel sent out a press release that had me shaking my head. It seems that putting out multiple variant covers and chasing that first-issue sales bump over and over doesn’t lead to healthy long-term sales, so they announced “Marvel’s Issue #2 Promotional Program”: we’re pleased to announce a new initiative that will provide extra promotion and marketing for the exciting issue #2’s of new series! In addition to heavy promotion and marketing for the first […]

Make Comics Like the Pros

These days, a comic guidebook doesn’t get published without including business advice. That’s a good thing — artists should learn more than they were traditionally taught about how to make a living (just as businesspeople should learn more about valuing creativity, but that’s a different post) — but with so many different formats and industry paths available to people these days, a lot of books aren’t clear enough about their target audience. (See, for example, Brian Michael Bendis’ Words for […]

Order These Comics! Coming October 2015

I haven’t done this for a while, but it’s a new site layout, and there are some comics worth paying attention to in the August Previews catalog, for books shipping October 2015 or later. News Items A new Finder story, “Torch”, by Carla Speed McNeil begins serialization in Dark Horse Presents #15 (AUG15 0042, due out October 21, $4.99). Here’s an online preview. It follows on from Third World (good, since that ended on a cliffhanger) and tells the story […]

Cool-Looking Comics Due in August

Hey, it’s Previews time again! Orders are due to your local comic shop by June 18 if you’re interested in committing to buy anything from the current catalog. Here are some items I found interesting-looking. Zodiac Starforce #1 (JUN15 0045, $3.99) — a four-issue miniseries from Kevin Panetta, Paulina Ganucheau, and Dark Horse. Previously a webcomic, this series should appeal to fans of Sailor Moon and Steven Universe, since it features teen girls with magic powers. The Eltingville Club #2 […]

Eternals: A Marvel Knights Animation Motion Comic

I was surprised when Eternals arrived, since I didn’t remember a comic by Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr. about a race of super-powered Jack Kirby creations hiding as humans recapturing their memories and powers. (Turns out it was a limited series that ran from 2006-2007.) This Marvel Knights Animation production consists of ten episodes, each ranging from 10 to 13 minutes. There’s minimal animation — figures moved against a background, lips and eyes opening and closing — an approach […]

C2E2: Mark Waid, Comics Retailer vs. Mark Waid, Digital Publisher

I went to two panels at C2E2. One was on Digital Comics; the other was titled “Mark Waid, Comics Retailer vs. Mark Waid, Digital Publisher”, which I thought was the best panel title ever. As Waid explained, he launched Thrillbent.com, a digital comics site, in 2012 with John Rogers (Leverage, Blue Beetle). Digital comics were considered by some retailers to mean the death of print, the end of comics as we knew them overnight. Last year, Waid bought a comic […]

Young Romance 2: The Best of Simon & Kirby Romance Comics

The first Young Romance volume must have done well, because here’s a second collection of classic love stories by masters of the comic medium Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. In contrast to that volume, which ranged more widely across years and titles, this one more closely approaches chronological coverage. The reprints here come from Young Romance #1-10 (with the exception of stories included in the first book) and Young Love #1-2, published from 1947-1949. A thorough introduction by comic historian […]

Wolverine vs. Sabretooth: The Marvel Knights Animation Motion Comic

Out tomorrow is the latest Marvel Knights motion comic release from Shout! Factory, Wolverine vs. Sabretooth. I tried to watch it, I did. But I don’t like Jeph Loeb’s writing. I didn’t like the prehistoric werewolf opening or watching bloody scenes of disembowelment while the narrator, Wolverine, says things to himself like “Having spent the better part of my life with no real certainty who I was or where I came from. And no, it wasn’t the beer. Suddenly, I […]
