12 Horrible Superhero Comic Stories for Women

Given recent topics of discussion, KC and I started talking over some of our “favorite” bad superhero stories when it comes to the treatment of female characters. These are the stories where, months or years later, you find yourself wondering “who thought THAT was a good idea?” or “did the writer just get dumped by his girlfriend?” This is just an approximate ranking, and I welcome discussion/debate in the comments. Especially if we’ve forgotten some real doozies. 12. The blase’ […]

DC Relaunch Titles I’m Looking Forward To (And Why I Don’t Care for the Others)

Now that I’m caught up on writing about the DC relaunch news itself, let’s take a look at the titles announced so far. They’ve been trickling out in themed posts: The Big Guns: Justice League #1 by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee I’m not excited by the creators, but I will check it out as the flagship; it should be a good indicator of the tone of the line. Wonder Woman #1 by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang Definitely. Anything […]

Kodansha Comics Announces Upcoming Titles for Summer 2011

Today, Kodansha Comics announced their much-awaited lineup of manga. Since they replaced Del Rey Manga at the beginning of this month, fans have been eager to hear which ongoing series will be continuing and which new titles may be coming. The front page of the Kodansha US website currently reads as follows: The following new titles will make their English-language debut next summer: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney returns in this new manga series written by Kenji Kuroda and illustrated by […]

DC Launches Earth One; Reaction Not as Positive as Hoped

Yesterday, DC Comics announced Earth One: two direct-to-book-format stories, one each for Superman and Batman, retelling the origin in modern day, in a “new continuity”, created by names well-known to current comic readers. The reaction was generally negative, although the reason WHY it was disliked varied greatly depending on the speaker. And before I get into all that, note that key details are missing from the announcement, like price point, marketing plans, and release dates, so a lot of reaction, […]

Minx No More: DC Cancels Girls’ GN Line

Wow. I knew the DC line of graphic novels for girls young adults (as DC puts it, and that wishy-washiness may have been one of its problems) wasn’t getting a lot of attention, but I expected it to last through its second year instead of being truncated. Comic Book Resources is reporting that DC has cancelled the Minx line. After putting out six books in 2007, this year so far they’d released Burnout (best of the lot, in my opinion) […]

The Great Women Cartoonists and the Great Women Superheroes

The Great Women Superheroes Kitchen Sink Press, 1996 The Great Women Superheroes is pretty much what it sounds like. Trina Robbins’ author’s note provides some useful clarification: This book is called The Great Women Superheroes, rather than An Encyclopedia of Women Superheroes, so that I could include only those whom I felt to be the best, the worst, the silliest, or the most interesting. … I had to define superheroines as those comic book heroines who fit in at least […]

DC Aims at Teenage Girls

Today’s NY Times has an article (registration required) on Minx, DC Comics’ new line of graphic novels for teenage girls. Disclaimer: I’m quoted in it, because the author, an old Usenet friend, needed someone familiar with the subject matter at short notice who wasn’t actually working on the project. That’s not going to stop me from pointing out some of the sillier statements in the piece, though. It starts with a quote from Karen Berger: “It’s time we got teenage […]

Girls Discover Wizard Sexist

Recently, a bunch of online commentators have been discussing how Wizard‘s how-to guide objectifies women. At first, all this hoo-hah sounded to me rather like Claude Rains’ character in Casablanca: “I am shocked, SHOCKED to find that gambling is going on in here!” Who doesn’t know that Wizard is targeted at adolescent (in mind if not still in body) males? Of course their view of women is of unknown creatures only to be stared at, because that’s how teenage boys […]
