How’s Life With Archie Doing?

We won’t know for sure until the year-end sales figures are out, but I’ve been wondering how Life With Archie has been doing. I’ve noticed a number of format changes in the magazine that concern me. Issue #12, shown here, changed its cover noticeably between solicitation (on the left) and what actually shipped (on the right). The feature promos are missing, with no celebrity pictures on the cover to draw teen attention. They came close to being false advertising at […]

SPX 2011: Quick Thoughts and Mini Reviews

From my perspective, the 2011 Small Press Expo has been very busy and crowded. Yesterday, I arrived at 8 AM to help with registering exhibitors. Picture below taken by volunteer coordinator Michael Thomas, who was doing an amazing job. That’s Daniel (who helped me figure out we met at an SPX in 1998, we think it was), Catie Donnelly (who makes webcomics; this was her first SPX!), and me in my antique staff shirt, from when they were trying to […]

Tokyopop Planning the Return of Hetalia #3?

Late Friday evening, a post went up on the Tokyopop Facebook page asking an interesting question: if there is a way to bring you Hetalia V. 3 but it’s a bit more limited than back in the old days, would you be interested? (I know that’s vague — not trying to be coy but wanted to see the level of enthusiasm before I’m able to get into more specifics). If you “like” this, I’ll take that to mean you’d be […]

Rocketeer on Blu-ray Announced

Just in time for Christmas, Disney has announced The Rocketeer on Blu-ray in a 20th anniversary edition. Release date is December 13. The film is a cult favorite, about mechanic and test pilot Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell), his curmudgeonly buddy (Alan Arkin), and his Bettie Page-like girlfriend (Jennifer Connelly) using a jetpack to fight Nazis in Hollywood. One of the bad guys is Timothy Dalton, playing an Errol Flynn-type star with secret leanings. I didn’t realize that director Joe Johnston […]

Criminal: The Last of the Innocent

Many many people have had the idea of doing an adult take on Archie and his gang, but few have executed it with so much skill and insight. Criminal: The Last of the Innocent uses the familiar characters of the gawky boy, his dopey friend, the girl friend who wanted to be the girlfriend, and the desirable rich girl in a noir-ish tale about murder and reinvention. Plus, with contrasting visuals of dark present day and brighter, simpler pages that […]

My Boyfriend Is a Monster: Under His Spell

I enjoyed one of the books in this series so much, I thought I’d try another one. Under His Spell pairs Bethany, a determined soccer player praised for avoiding “boy-based distractions”, with a foreign transfer student who turns out to be a fairy prince. It’s written by Marie P. Croall and illustrated by Hyeondo Park. Allein has been sent to our world to hide from a war over the inheritance of the throne, but his cousin has led a band […]

My Boyfriend Is a Monster: Made for Each Other

When I found out that “teen paranormal romance” is one of the hottest new book genres, I thought I should check out this graphic novel line trading on its popularity. (It didn’t hurt that writer Paul Storrie was an old friend.) I’m glad I did, because I got a fun monster love story, but one more creative and unusual in its content than I suspected. “My Boyfriend Is a Monster” is an umbrella title; each of the entries stands alone. […]

SPX Snuck Up on Me — It’s Next Weekend!

Wow, lots to do to get ready for one of the most exciting conventions of the year. The Small Press Expo for 2011 is taking place next Saturday and Sunday, September 10-11, at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. (According to their reservation email, their restaurant and lounge will be closed for renovation, which should make socializing interesting.) In addition to preparing for the many exciting panels, of which I’m hosting one, I’ve also been making a substantial […]
