Underwire

Jennifer Hayden‘s autobiographical slice-of-life comics fall into a well-known genre, but her position — as the middle-aged mother of two — provides a viewpoint we don’t often see expressed in comics from such a position of knowledge. Underwire began as a webcomic, and this Top Shelf collection includes 22 of those stories, plus 17 new pages. She tells tales about her family, influenced by sitcom structure. How can you not enjoy cartoons by someone who compares being middle-aged to “like […]

SPX Programming Posted — Come See My Panel

The programming for SPX 2011 has been posted, and I will be moderating this panel: Navigating the Contemporary Publishing Landscape, Sunday, 1:30 pm In the early 2000s, corporate publishers nearly raced to acquire graphic novels. Now, as the mainstream publishing industry faces severe contractions and as online media assumes many traditional functions of publishing, cartoonists face a rapidly changing publishing landscape, one that includes a resurgent small press. Johanna Draper Carlson will speak with Mike Dawson, Meredith Gran, Roger Langridge, […]

Exclusive Preview of Princeless, Due in October — Recommended!

Princeless is a new four-issue miniseries that I’m quite taken with. The first issue is available for order now from Action Lab Entertainment, Diamond code AUG11 0748, $3.99 US. Written by Jeremy Whitley and drawn and colored by M. Goodwin, it will be available in stores in October. As you can read in this four-page preview of the book’s opening pages, it’s a funny revamp take on the traditional fairytale story. Princess Adrienne is full of energy and will, so […]

The Other Captain America Movies Will Be on DVD Too

Found on Amazon, there will be a November release for Captain America and its sequel Captain America II: Death Too Soon. These are the two 1979 TV movies starring the otherwise unknown Reb Brown, put out to keep the previously announced 90s telefilm company (it’s due out later this month), along with the big-budget Marvel movie that was so successful this summer. Shout! Factory is releasing, so the package should be nice, if nothing else — they’re a quality label. […]

1990 Captain America DVD Delayed, Cover Updated

The 1990 Captain America movie DVD, previously announced for release on July 19 via the MGM Limited Edition made-on-demand imprint, has been rescheduled for August 23. It will also have a new cover design, shown here, that adds the banner “re-released 1992 edition”. (Note that the movie was made in 1990, released internationally, and finally dumped straight to video in the U.S. in 1992, which is where that date comes from.) I wonder if some big company that might be […]

Renaissance, New Series by Van Lente and Oleksyk, Looks Amazing

Fred Van Lente (writer of Comic Book Comics, Action Philosophers, and the comic that a little movie called Cowboys & Aliens is based on) and Sarah Oleksyk (Ivy) are teaming up for a new comic, Renaissance. That link is not work-safe, since it features a naked, foul-mouthed Pope, his mistress, and his daughter (!) advising him. But gracious, it’s lovely. With Van Lente’s love of history (and penchant for good research) and Oleksyk’s elegant figures, this looks to be a […]

Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers Due on DVD September 13

Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers is the newest Marvel Knights animation/motion comic project, first released online earlier this year. Based on the trailer, I found it a major step forward for the fledgling medium. Now comes word that the short series will be available on DVD on September 13. List price is $14.97 (although you can already find it much less than that) for four episodes. Note that each ran over 15 minutes, for a total running time about 72 […]
