A Drunken Dream and Other Stories

Guest review by Ed Sizemore As the title indicates, A Drunken Dream and Other Stories is a collection of short stories spanning the career of Moto Hagio. Hagio is considered one of the pioneers, not only of shoujo manga, but also the boys love genre (non-explicit, romantic stories of boys/young men) and by extension yaoi (explicit, romantic stories featuring men). This book serves as an introduction to both Hagio and her body of work. Drunken Dream contains a wide variety […]

Scott Pilgrim on DVD Today

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the under-appreciated but excellent movie adaption of the graphic novel series, debuts on DVD today. Here’s more information on the many special features. I’ll have a review coming later this week once I can sit down and savor all its goodness. In the meantime, have some video clips! Here’s a behind-the-scenes about the comic book, creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, and how he worked with director Edgar Wright. Casting was important, to get the right look […]

I Am Here! Volume 1

Hikage Sumino is a shy, plain girl with no friends who is invisible to a ridiculous degree. For instance, she gets hit with a motorbike because the driver didn’t see her in the road while she was saving a cat crossing the busy street. Hinata and Teru are the most popular boys in their middle school. While nursing a sunflower plant, Hikage and Hinata talk — he’s noticed her, knows her name, and says he’s been watching her for a […]

Tokyopop Sells Print on Demand Books

Tokyopop now has available at their online store a number of print-on-demand volumes, following up on their plans from August 2009. They’re priced at $15.99, a significant increase over the typical $10 or $11 price point, but the company has been experimenting with cover prices for a while now. The rule seems to be, the more specialized the audience, the higher price they’re expected to pay. (Previously, yaoi was the most expensive Tokyopop release.) I couldn’t find a comprehensive list […]

Questionable Content Volume 1

My favorite young adult soap opera webcomic, Questionable Content, has finally been collected! The strip by Jeph Jacques has been running since 2003, publishing more than 1700 comics so far. I don’t remember when I started reading it, but it was long after its beginning, so I’m thrilled to get a chance to see the start. The book is available direct from TopatoCo; Questionable Content volume 1 is $18 (plus shipping). It collects the first 300 strips with artist commentary […]

I Interview Alex de Campi About the Ubiquitous Digital Valentine

For this week’s PW Comics Week, I interviewed Alex de Campi about her digital comic Valentine and the issues she’s had making it so widely available in so many different formats. Key excerpt: De Campi’s activities are driven by a unique understanding of the speed of digital. She knows her audience is asking, “Why wait?” As she sees it, “This isn’t that world any more. We want everything now, thank you, and in convenient digital form and not for some […]

Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy

Review by Johanna and KC Carlson The 25th Anniversary Trilogy edition of Back to the Future totally justifies the purchase of our Blu-ray player. The excellent picture quality (newly restored for this release) made me feel like I was watching it for the first time. As for special features, the set is so comprehensive it’s almost overkill. You have the movies on both Blu-ray and DVD. You have all these extras (some redundant, but extra points for being complete). You […]
