Cartoon Cute Animals

Christopher Hart’s latest how-to-draw book, Cartoon Cute Animals, is subtitled “How to Draw the Most Irresistible Creatures on the Planet!” but I would have called it “A pose book for ripping off Chuck Jones”, since all these adorable kittens and puppies and chipmunks look like they stepped right out of one of his cartoons. There are plenty of examples of expressions and poses, with chapters determined by animal type: cats and dogs, bears, woodland creatures (including chipmunk, beaver, raccoon, rabbit, […]

Rapunzel’s Revenge

Rapunzel’s Revenge is a twisted take on the fairy tale that sparkles with life, intelligence, wit, adventure, and just plain fun. For the first time, the story of a girl locked in a tower by an evil stepmother and her excessively long hair makes a certain amount of sense. Writers Shannon and Dean Hale give Rapunzel character and motivation — she’s active, making choices, instead of someone bad things are done to. Oh, there’s plenty of that, too, but she […]

FBI Shuts Down HTML Comics

The HTML Comics site, a huge repository of online comics both current and older, has been shut down by the FBI, according to a press release from law firm Katten Muchin Rosenman. Comic book pirating website www.htmlcomics.com has been shut down and all of its servers confiscated, following an FBI search based on a warrant alleging criminal copyright infringement. The Guild #2

The Guild #2 continues showing us how Cyd (Felicia Day’s character) came to be part of the online role-playing game that means so much to her. It does this by emphasizing what a jerk her boyfriend is, in a structure that’s a classic example of the unreliable narrator. Cyd thinks she’s happy because she thinks she’s helping her boyfriend and his band. We, in contrast, easily see that she’s coming up with all the ideas while he’s doing nothing but […]

The Muppet Show #5

The Family Reunion storyline continues from issue #4. In this issue, it’s Miss Piggy’s turn, with the visit of her nephews Randy and Andy, who are incredibly stupid pigs. I never cared for them much when they appeared on Muppets Tonight!, but in print, they’re funny to me. Perhaps because I can enjoy how they waste everyone else’s time without feeling that mine is wasted, since they take up relatively less screen time. And since their appearance is framed as […]

Zuda Eliminates Competitions

Following in the tradition of announcing unusual or unpleasant news on Friday afternoon, Zuda Comics posted today that they were making some “important site changes”. They will be eliminating the monthly competition format, as of now. They acknowledged that the setup had both pluses and minuses: Those of you familiar with the history of the competition know that we’ve had our ups and downs. While I don’t think anyone can argue with the quality of previous competition winners like HIGH […]

Muppets and Fraggles: Licensed Kids’ Comics Reviews

Fraggle Rock #1 The Fraggles return in a new licensed three-issue miniseries from Archaia, the first publication stemming from their deal with the Jim Henson Company announced last year. The comic is in the square format also used by Mouse Guard, and this first issue contains three color stories for $3.95 US. The main story, by Heather White and Jeff Stokely, features faithful likenesses, but there’s a stiffness to them, a sense that we’re watching still photos of puppets instead […]
