Kingsman: The Secret Service the Latest Mark Millar Comic to Become a Movie

Kingsman: The Secret Service might be the first Mark Millar-written comic to become a movie that I bother seeing. Kick-Ass looked too violent (and frankly, stupid), while Wanted seemed generic. But Kingsman has Colin Firth in some fine suits, as shown in this trailer. Unfortunately, the hero, a kid (Taron Egerton) taken under superspy Firth’s wing, is the generic lower-class white guy with unexpected (and unexplained) skills and natural abilities that Millar loves so much. The comic, a six-issue miniseries […]

Amazing Spider-Man 2 Now Available on Digital, DVD Coming August 19

I was surprised when a co-worker mentioned that he was going to finally get to see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (which like me, he’d missed in the theaters), because I hadn’t realized it was available already from your favorite digital movie source, including Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, Xbox Video, and Sony Entertainment Network. As with so many others these days, the digital copy is available several weeks before the home video version can be bought. Here’s a trailer to […]

Diagram for Delinquents

Diagram for Delinquents is a movie-length documentary exploring Dr. Fredric Wertham and his effect on society with his drive to blame comics for juvenile delinquency. The documentary aims to start from zero for the audience, beginning with explaining comics and their readers with narration by Bradford Wright, author of Comic Book Nation; Carol Tilley, author of Seducing the Innocent, a much-discussed response to Wertham’s charges and errors; and Amy Nyberg, author of Seal of Approval, the best book on the […]

Guardians of the Galaxy

I only went to see Guardians of the Galaxy tonight because KC and a friend wanted to go, and I figured it was now or never — wait too long to see a big picture (which means longer than opening weekend these days), and too much will be spoiled. (No spoilers here.) I’m really glad I went. Although I wasn’t interested in the characters or premise going in, I enjoyed the movie a lot, and I had a good time. […]

Ant-Man Announces Cast Members With Comic-Con Appearances

Like everyone else, I’m unhappy to hear that Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The World’s End) will no longer be directing Marvel’s Ant-Man movie, since I like his unique visual sense. However, I still want to see Paul Rudd (as Scott Lang) and Michael Douglas (Hank Pym) super-heroing together. Particularly after seeing footage of them interacting at last weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, as shown here: Both appeared at the con for the first time to promote the upcoming […]

X-Men: Days of Future Past on DVD October, Digital HD September

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced home video release dates for X-Men: Days of Future Past. The movie will be available on Blu-ray on October 14, with digital purchases available a month earlier, on September 23. The packages include a Blu-ray with digital copy (shown here, list price $40), a 3-D-included deluxe edition ($50), and a standard DVD ($30). As is sadly becoming typical, there doesn’t seem to be a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. (I blame those who buy the […]

JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time Now Widely Available

JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time was a Target-only exclusive beginning in January. Now, the original-to-DVD animated movie will have an official wide release today, May 20. There’s no difference between the two versions, except it now may be easier to find. JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time is a short cartoon movie, running just over 52 minutes. The Justice League — Superman (Peter Jessop), Wonder Woman (Grey DeLisle Griffin), Flash (Jason Spisak), Aquaman (Liam O’Brien), Batman (Diedrich Bader), Robin (Jack DeSena), […]

X-Men: Days of Future Past Trailer

I like the mutant movies — yes, even X-Men 3 — but this X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer looks awfully dark and grim. 70s costumes rock, though. I guess, since Bryan Singer, director of the first two X-Men films, is back, I should have more faith and hope. It’s certainly got an amazingly full cast. Most surprising to me: I realized that Marvel has *4* movies coming out this summer — Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the […]
