A Visual History of Black Panther’s Costumes

There’s another comic book superhero getting a lot of press, with the Black Panther movie coming out later this month, so here’s a visual history of his costumes, both comic and movie versions. As you might expect from someone running around in what’s basically a black bodysuit — and let’s not pretend the reasons for covering up his face are completely “unknown” — the differences are in the details. I’ve previously posted other such infographics; the most recent was Catwoman’s […]

Takane & Hana Volume 1

I’ve found my next frothy romance manga to enjoy — Yuki Shiwasu’s Takane & Hana is ridiculous from the start but has a fun sense of humor, as the leads tell each other off while getting glimpses into each other’s very different lives. Hana is 16, a high school student, but as the book opens, she’s been dolled up for a marriage meeting. She doesn’t want to be there, but her gorgeous, spoiled, seven-years-older sister, who’s supposed to be taking […]

IDW Offers International Services to Other Publishers

Now here’s a smart way to make additional money — set something up that you need, then offer the service to others like you. IDW International manages foreign rights (international licensing) for publishers including themselves, Oni Press, Archie Comics, and now Tokyopop. That means they help sell these publishers’ comics into non-English-language markets. That’s a useful source of extra money for publishers, but it requires skills and time that smaller firms likely don’t have. (I do wonder about Tokyopop as […]

Usagi Yojimbo, Rabbit Samurai, Optioned for Cartoon

The incredibly long-running Usagi Yojimbo comic — most recent issue was #165 in December, and it’s all been written and drawn by one guy, Stan Sakai, with colors by Tom Luth — has been optioned for an animated TV series by the French company Gaumont. Co-producers will include Sakai, Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg, and James Wan’s Atomic Monster (which is best known for horror movies and the MacGyver relaunch). Gaumont’s President of Animation, Nicolas Atlan, said […]

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is my new favorite of the DCU original animated films. It takes the original source and changes it to make for a better cartoon movie, emphasizing atmosphere over plot (although the story is full of twists, keeping my attention throughout). I previously posted the trailer and plot description, but the high concept is simple: Steampunk Batman fights Jack the Ripper. However, there are a number of deviations from the original comic (which was retroactively called the […]

In this NY Times article, it’s revealed that DC will launch two new graphic novel imprints this fall. DC Zoom will feature stories for middle grade readers, and DC Ink will focus on young adults…. Though a few of the graphic novels will have creators who are already working in the comic book industry, the majority of the writers are a Who’s Who of popular novelists for young readers. Chuck Rozanski of Mile High Comics is quoted as saying “material […]

How Many Comic Publishers Does Disney Need?

Disney owns Marvel, so Marvel puts out the Star Wars comics now (after Dark Horse having them for years). Unless they’re the all-ages versions, which are released by IDW, who also puts out Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories. Fantagraphics has the historical strips, with their Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck classic comic collections. Then there are Tokyopop’s manga Disney reprints, and whatever Joe Books does. That’s five. And that’s only what’s currently/recently being published. Now comes number six: Dark Horse […]
