Two Generals

Scott Chantler has previously created some astounding historical fiction — Northwest Passage was one of my Best Graphic Novels of 2007 — but here, he expands into a real-life “graphic memoir”. Two Generals is based on his grandfather’s diary during World War II, as Chantler explains in an illustrated prologue. Law Chantler and his buddy Jack were officers in the Highland Light Infantry of Canada, but much of their service took place overseas as part of the Allied invasion of […]

Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy

Review by Johanna and KC Carlson The 25th Anniversary Trilogy edition of Back to the Future totally justifies the purchase of our Blu-ray player. The excellent picture quality (newly restored for this release) made me feel like I was watching it for the first time. As for special features, the set is so comprehensive it’s almost overkill. You have the movies on both Blu-ray and DVD. You have all these extras (some redundant, but extra points for being complete). You […]

Lost: The Complete Sixth Season (and the Complete Collection)

Review by KC Carlson To paraphrase someone much smarter than me, “Writing intelligently about Lost is like dancing about architecture.” There has been so much written about Lost over the past six years that it’s been on broadcast TV — and especially this final year — it’s difficult to find anything new to say about it. Besides, it seems somewhat appropriate to attach Lost to a famous literary quote, especially one whose actual origins are widely disputed. (The original quotation […]

Fantasia / Fantasia 2000 Double Disc Edition Announced

Due out November 30 is the re-release of Fantasia, Disney’s collection of animated classical music videos, in a special edition with its companion remake (with different musical pieces), Fantasia 2000. The Blu-ray is definitely the edition to get, since it comes with four discs (each movie on both Blu-ray and DVD) at a price difference of only $6. The list price is $46, while the two-disc DVD edition is $40. At Amazon right now, the price difference shrinks even further, […]

Interview With Colleen Doran on the Business of Being a Comic Artist

I’m honored that noted comic artist Colleen Doran agreed to take the time to answer my questions. Her lengthy experience as a freelance illustrator and her outspokenness about problems that can occur in the comic business make her someone I admire. I spoke with her via email about how to manage a career as an independent artist and advice for aspiring creators. She discusses how to stay flexible and how she’s managed the many changes in the industry over the […]

Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy Due October 26

I know I was annoyed by Blu-ray for a while, but I think we picked just the right time to jump, since lots of our favorites are just now being re-released in that format. And as the studios hoped, since we have a new Blu-ray player, we’re eager for content to feed into it. The latest announcement that has me salivating is that the Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy is due out on Blu-ray October 25th (my birthday […]

To Terra … Volume 1

I tried to read To Terra… once before, three years ago, just after it came out. I didn’t make it through. It was so old-fashioned in both look and story — as the copyright page notes, it was originally serialized from 1977-1980. It’s also got what I call the 2001 problem, after the movie. I am told that Keiko Takemiya was an originator, that her work here inspired so many others that what was then innovative quickly became cliché as […]
