Green Lantern: Interview With Victor Garber

Here starts the promotion for Green Lantern: First Flight: a PR-provided interview with Victor Garber, voice of Sinestro. His bio reads: The Canadian-born Garber first captured national attention in his 1973 big screen debut as Jesus in Godspell. Garber’s film credits include Titanic, Milk, and Sleepless in Seattle, while his television career boasts six Emmy Award nominations spread over four different series, miniseries, and movies. He earned a Saturn Award as Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series for his […]

Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter / Under the Hood

These two special features collected on DVD are due in stores March 24. Tales of the Black Freighter 26 minutes. Rated R for “violent and grisly images”. (That’s fun to say.) Those images consist of various body parts floating around the ocean, and bodies exploding from decay, and the protagonist building a raft of bodies. Anyone who’s read the graphic novel or seen the movie won’t be terribly shocked by all this, I fear. (And if you haven’t, why would […]

Lost Season 4

Review by KC Carlson In which a creative compromise set an endpoint and revitalized a meandering TV series. Lost: Season 4 (6 DVD set, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, $59.99) set some very high standards for the future of scripted network programming — still somewhat in doubt over the shortsighted dominance of low-cost “reality” programming at the big networks — as well as once again demonstrating that the DVD is the perfect format for shows like Lost, which improve with — […]

Blue Beetle: Road Trip

Blue Beetle: Road Trip is the second book in the series about the young superhero, and it’s where the stories really start clicking. Jaime Reyes has an alien scarab bonded to him, and it gives him the power to fly, to create armor, to fire blasts… and to get in over his head fighting intergalactic threats. Jaime’s got a background different from most teen superheroes: he lives in El Paso, and he’s Hispanic. The art (especially the colors by Guy […]

Iron Man DVD (Review)

I’ve been looking forward to the Ultimate 2-disc Edition of the Iron Man DVD since it was announced in August. I think, though, that my anticipation backfired. My love for the movie hasn’t changed, but I found many of the special features weren’t as exciting as I had hoped. DVD Choices For me, the appeal of the film was the character, the man inside the suit, but that’s not the direction followed here. This was Marvel’s first in-house production after […]

Pushing Daisies

Pushing Daisies combines the love-with-obstacles relationship of a great screwball comedy with the brightly candy-colored visual imagination of the (first) Willy Wonka movie or The Wizard of Oz. There’s even a plummy voiced narrator (Jim Dale, who sometimes amusingly contradicts the characters) with a flowery sense of diction. I find it odd that I’m comparing this completely unique show to the best kids’ movies, but there’s something both very adult — dealing with themes of life and death and who […]

In Odd We Trust

I haven’t read Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas series of novels, but In Odd We Trust, an original graphic novel prequel co-written and illustrated by Queenie Chan (The Dreaming), makes me interested in seeing more. The young man strangely named Odd Thomas is a genius pancake maker who can also talk to ghosts. (Think a male Ghost Whisperer, only the ghosts he sees don’t speak.) He lives in a small California town, almost a character in itself, where he’s accepted as […]

PR: What Not to Do: Excessive Pricing

Have you heard about the upcoming anthology volume Kramer’s Ergot 7 from Buenaventura Press? It’s a deluxe original hardcover — which has been done before, most often with reprint material — but due to publishing it at larger-than-newspaper page size, they’re pricing it at $125. For 96 pages. That’s quite a chunk of change to lay out for an experimental anthology. Maybe I’m the only one having trouble with that format lately, but I’ve pretty much quit reading multi-creator anthologies […]
