Comic Planning Tool

Deadlines are tough. If you have trouble with them, one way to take a new approach to the problem is starting at the beginning. Was there enough time allotted for everything that needed to be done? Did the schedule allow for emergencies and down time? Is the goal date even reasonable? Artist Carey Pietsch (Lumberjanes) has created a spreadsheet template to help answer those questions. You can plug in your deadline, the length of your book, and your working speed […]

DC Super Hero Girls: Intergalactic Games

DC Super Hero Girls: Intergalactic Games is the second animated feature (after Hero of the Year) starring the toy line, and it’s better than the first. I’ve already posted the trailer, but this was even more fun than I expected. That’s in part because there is a LOT going on here, keeping things interesting. And you’ll want to keep the pause button nearby, to catch the cameos and background designs. The movie, a zippy hour and seventeen minutes, begins when […]

Wonder Woman: Commemorative Edition and “What Makes a Wonder Woman”

I’ve now had a chance to watch the Wonder Woman: Commemorative Edition, which came out earlier this week. I remembered why I didn’t care for the movie, but I liked the new featurette, “What Makes a Wonder Woman”. It’s only ten minutes, compared to the 25 minutes each of the other two carry-over special features, but I’m not sure what more they could have said without going into tricky political topics that wouldn’t fit this promotional item. Commentators on-screen include […]

Whiteout Coming Back to Print

Whiteout was a gripping mystery-thriller written by Greg Rucka (Wonder Woman, Lazarus) and illustrated by Steve Lieber (The Fix) with a unique setting: the military base in Antarctica. It was a fascinating read, with a non-typical lead investigator, and a remarkable environment to build suspense. Originally a four-issue miniseries, Whiteout was first collected in 1999, with a sequel, Whiteout: Melt, the next year. It became a not-very-good movie with Kate Beckinsale in 2009. Oni Press republished the collections as remastered […]

First Class Murder

Robin Stevens’ schoolgirl detectives of Murder Is Bad Manners return in their third adventure in First Class Murder. Fans of classic mysteries will love the setting: the two young women are taking the Orient Express! After the dismaying events of Hazel’s visit to Daisy’s home (Poison Is Not Polite), Hazel’s father thinks the girls need a holiday. It’s one thing to investigate murders, but quite another when all the suspects are family or friends. To get their minds off that […]

More Marvel Water Bottles, With Guardians of the Galaxy

Nalgene has added to its line of reusable Marvel water bottles with new Guardians of the Galaxy models. There are six large bottles, one each for Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, Rocket, and a shot of the team together. Plus one more, a 20-ounce bottle for kids with Rocket and Groot. This was my favorite choice (sent to me for review), since it addressed all the issues I had when I first tried some of the bottles. It’s small enough […]

Tetris: The Games People Play

It’s astounding what fascinating graphic novels can be made from the most unexpected subjects! Box Brown (Andre The Giant: Life and Legend) demonstrates that with Tetris: The Games People Play, which starts out as a history of the immensely popular, deceptively simple video game. As it continues, though, we see ruminations on the nature and history of art and sport. Games develop analytical skills and pleasure people’s brains with fun. Tetris was created in 1984 by a Russian programmer with […]

Berlin #20

I’m not going to review Berlin #20 here, because who starts a 22-part series at this point? I did want to take a moment, though, to say congratulations to Jason Lutes for sticking with the series. Berlin began in spring 1996 from Black Eye Books (another Canadian publisher who also put out work by Jay Stephens, Ed Brubaker, and Dylan Horrocks). The first third of the story was collected in 2000 as Berlin: City of Stones; the second part, Berlin: […]
