Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders

I liked it! It’s fun! Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders is my new favorite original DC animated movie, because it kept my interest throughout. In case you missed seeing the trailer, this feature-length cartoon is set in the “Batman ’66” world, based on the TV show, with the original voices of Adam West as Batman, Burt Ward as Robin, and Julie Newmar as Catwoman. This film is, as is typical of those in the past, 80 minutes or so […]

Win an Autographed Copy of Black Widow: Red Vengeance

Marvel Press has provided the opportunity for one reader of this site to win an autographed copy of Black Widow: Red Vengeance, the recently released newest entry in the book series by Margaret Stohl. (They sent me a copy, but mine wasn’t autographed, so this is pretty nifty.) Here’s the book description: Emotions are dangerous, which is why the graduates of Moscow’s famed spy school the Red Room are taught to keep their enemies close and their loved ones at […]

Marvel Launches Video Comics

Every so often, someone tries to repurpose comic content for a presumed younger audience that wants more sound and motion in their entertainment. The latest incarnation is Marvel Video Comics, described as “an all-new visual storytelling format that combines comic-style graphic paneling with dialogue, sound, video editing, digital motion effects, and light animation.” They’re three-minute storyboards, basically. So far, there are four — and I find it interesting that they’re posted at the Disney XD YouTube channel. (The Marvel Entertainment […]

Ms. Marvel Wants Everyone to Vote… on November 30

This is a terrific idea with really bad timing. The next issue of Ms. Marvel, #13, features a sequence, shown here, where Ms. Marvel tries to get everyone to vote. That’s terrific, and a great choice for the most successful of Marvel’s new generation superheroes. Except… the issue will go on sale on November 30. Election Day is November 8. Oops. The story is written by G. Willow Wilson, art is by Marta Andolfo, and cover by Joelle Jones. Marvel […]

Wizard World Announces 2017 Schedule With Fewer Shows

Want to go to a convention with plenty of second-tier media stars, former sci-fi actors, lots of cosplay, and a variety of merchandise that may or may not be comic-related? (I know that’s snarky, but if you go the shows with the right attitude, there’s a fun Disney World aspect to the whole thing.) Wizard World has announced their schedule of conventions for 2017, as follows: New Orleans, January 6-8 Portland, February 17-19 Cleveland, March 17-19 St. Louis, April 7-9 […]

Fumi Yoshinaga Manga Soon Available Digitally

I’m excited by the latest digital release news from Viz Media — later this month, key titles by my favorite manga-ka, Fumi Yoshinaga, will be available digitally. On November 8, her collection of short stories, All My Darling Daughters, debuts. In my opinion, this is the single best starting point for her work, since it’s a single volume with a range of content (although one of the stories does have a problematic teacher/student interaction). The week after, November 15, brings […]

Suicide Squad as a Waltz?!?

I watch Dancing With the Stars for two reasons — first, it’s something my mother and I can share talking about, which is nice, and second, I used to dance. (Competed internationally once in college.) Most of the “stars” aren’t really celebrities — heck, I haven’t heard of more than half of them each season — but they do all kinds of interesting costuming and scoring for theme nights. Last night, of course, was Halloween, so there was a nifty […]

Genshiken: Second Season Volume 8

I had hopes, from the beginning of this sequel series, that Genshiken: Second Season would be, like the first, a comedy set amongst nerds. I liked the portrayals of geek hobbies and fan pursuits of college students, with all the concerns and struggles they faced. Now, with volume 8, I have to admit that this has firmly turned into a harem series. Which makes little sense to me, since a whole bunch of characters are fixed on club alum Madarame, […]
