Off to TCAF! Panels on Travel, Memoir, and Sex

This weekend is the Toronto Comics Arts Festival, or TCAF, the reason I keep my passport current. It’s a wonderful show, free to everyone, held at the Toronto Reference Library, and with substantial content and attendees. I’m honored this year to be moderating three panels, all on topics I find fascinating in comics. Here’s my schedule, but visit the programming list to see the many more choices available as well. Art of the Travelogue, Saturday, 12:15pm, Marriott Bloor-Yorkville Hotel The […]

Afterlife With Archie #8

It’s been a while since we’ve seen an issue of Afterlife With Archie, the zombies-attack-Riverdale title that contains “mature content” and only sells in direct market comic stores. Issue #7 came out in December, and that kind of delay pretty much kills the suspense — although since it’s mostly “who’s going to get eaten next?” it’s not a fatal blow to the series. (The original timing is also alluded to in this issue’s mentions of it being Christmastime.) Most of […]

Jem and the Holograms #1-2

Never having watched the cartoon show, I wasn’t sure how much I’d enjoy the new licensed comic. I shouldn’t have worried — writer Kelly Thompson and artist Sophie Campbell do a terrific job setting up and refreshing the premise for today’s audience. I want to call particular attention to Campbell’s art and the coloring by M. Victoria Robado. (You can see preview pages online.) The book’s style is clean, open, and exciting, due to the candy colors and the expressive, […]

ComiXology Paying Bounties for New Website Customers

For years, Amazon has had a referral fee program, where an associate can share links to products. (I use it at this site to make a minimal amount to cover hosting fees and similar costs.) If those links are used to buy, then the associate gets a small cut. They also pay fees for signing up new customers to certain programs. For example, right now associates are getting $3 per person who signs up for Amazon Prime or tries Amazon […]

Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor #11

I haven’t been talking much about the Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor series. I liked companion Alice, but she quickly got lost in adding a couple more creatures traveling with them and a rather pedestrian storyline about the dangers of consumerism. However, I had to make note of issue #11 (written by Al Ewing and drawn by Boo Cook) because of companion Jones. He’s a Brit musician they picked up in the 60s. We’re told he’s destined to be a […]

No Mercy #2

It’s the abandoned kids’ first night after the bus crash, and things are getting much worse for them quickly. Various members of the group are handling the trauma in different fashions. Some are ignoring the depth of their risk, trying to find something to sing around the campfire. Others are attempting to care for their injured comrades, without the necessary knowledge or supplies, and becoming overwhelmed by the effort. The worst are panicking, which does no one any good but […]

Angel & Faith Season 10 #14

There are many benefits to continuing a beloved property in comic format: Storyline size. No budgets means bigger scope. Characters. Expand your cast regardless of whether actors are available, in shape, or as youthful as they used to be. Existence in perpetuity. Which can be a mixed bag, as there’s a drive to keep series going whether the writer has good idea for it or not. Sometimes an ending is a blessing. Which brings me to Angel & Faith Season […]
