The New Serialization: Digital With Preview Chapters — Heart in a Box

It used to be that a comic story (and I’m talking here about non-superhero work, stories that are planned to have some kind of ending) could be published as a limited-run miniseries and then collected into a final volume. However, miniseries these days don’t sell well. There are just too many comic options for shoppers, and many will wait for the eventual collection (since it’s a better package and often a better deal). So smart publishers have now switched to […]

Doctor Who Summer Comic Event Crosses Over Four Doctors

In keeping with the tradition of the big summer event, Titan Comics has announced that they will publish a five-part weekly crossover in August among their ongoing Doctor Who comic titles. Their “Year One” will conclude with issue #15 in each title, followed by this weekly event, “Four Doctors”, written by Paul Cornell and illustrated by Neil Edwards. Noelle Stevenson Brings Back Runaways

Marvel has announced that Runaways will return in June, which is exciting enough news in itself, but even more terrific is its writer — Noelle Stevenson! Stevenson is gathering plenty of praise for her Nimona, and she’s shown skill writing groups of young people in her work on Lumberjanes. I’m also looking forward to the character lineup — Molly Hayes, Jubilee, Bucky Barnes, Cloak & Dagger, Amadeus Cho, Skaar, and a “few new faces” — mainly because I loved Amadeus […]

Resident Alien: The Sam Hain Mystery #1

After the conspiracy theory that wove through Resident Alien: The Suicide Blonde, it’s a pleasure to get back to a more literary small-town mystery. In The Sam Hain Mystery, Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle — secretly a space alien stranded on earth — is seeking out Sixties pulp mysteries, only to find that one of the genre authors, Rex Monday, may have connections to the town. Few people remember his Sam Hain series character, but Harry would like to find out the […]

Lumberjanes #14

The more I read Lumberjanes, the more it grows on me. I’ve liked the concept — of a group of unique girls depending on each other — since the beginning, but some of the plots didn’t keep my interest as much as I hoped. However, now that the series is a bit more established, they’re beginning to explain more of the background, and that I’m really interested in. Take this issue. Written by Noelle Stevenson and Shannon Watters and illustrated […]

Red One Tries Again to Bring the European Hardcover to the American Market

With just two issues released so far, Red One hasn’t made much of an impact, yet it’s already being reprinted in “an oversized European-style hardcover” from Image Comics in July. That’s 59 story pages, plus enough bonus material to make 80 pages of content for $14.99. I’m not a fan of the format, because I think it’s a lot to pay for not a lot of reading — particularly since many of the European albums I’ve seen prefer art to […]

Odd Schnozz and the Odd Squad

As they’ve been doing recently, Oni Press is serializing the upcoming graphic novel Odd Schnozz and the Odd Squad through ComiXology ahead of release date. The full book will be out in late June, and this week chapter 2 (of 6) becomes available. It’s written by Jeffrey Burandt and illustrated by Dennis Culver, and it’s the story of a rock band, led by Liz, and all with cute nicknames, as shown here: They’re preparing to compete in a Battle of […]
