Sherlock Holmes Now Belongs to Everyone

I first reported on this at the end of last year, but now that the Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal by the Arthur Conan Doyle estate, there aren’t any more possible take-backs. Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, Mrs. Hudson, and the rest are in the public domain. Since the Supremes passed on review, this previous finding holds: “We cannot find any basis in statute or case law for extending a copyright beyond its expiration,” [a judge] wrote in […]

Comic/Media Art Mash-Ups

Old friend Brian Saner Lamken has done something creative — he’s selected famous images from superhero comics and found media pictures that allows him to graft the two together. Like this take on the classic Action Comics #1 cover, put together with Superman Returns. He’s calling the technique Panel to Frame. Vixens, Vamps & Vipers: Lost Villainesses of Golden Age Comics Reviewed

I mentioned Vixens, Vamps & Vipers: Lost Villainesses of Golden Age Comics last month when it came out, but I didn’t discuss it in depth because I was reviewing it for another site. That review is now posted at the Washington Independent Review of Books, in case you’re curious to find out more about this anthology of Golden Age comic stories featuring distinctive bad girls. Or check out editor Mike Madrid’s previous volume, Divas, Dames & Daredevils: Lost Heroines of […]

Marvel’s Upcoming Film Slate

Following Warner’s superhero movie slate announcement a couple of weeks ago, Marvel has laid out specifics of their movie plans in this video. Or, as they put it, details of their “cinematic universe”, which sounds much more exciting! The visuals are mostly logos, and the first couple are expected. After next year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron comes a Doctor Strange movie in late 2016. The Guardians of the Galaxy sequel has been moved to May 2017 so another Thor, Ragnarok, […]

Guardians of the Galaxy Out on Home Video for Holidays

Guardians of the Galaxy, like so many big movies these days, is getting a tiered release. You can rent or buy it digitally this month, on November 18, in HD or 3D formats. I’m curious to see it again, to see how it views differently now that I know the surprises … and how successful it was, as the number one movie of 2014. The home video release comes out in three formats next month, on December 9. There’s a […]

In Real Life

It’s a timely topic, the struggle of a young woman to play an immersive video game, but the recent explosion of debate over the place of women in gaming has unfortunately overtaken the events of In Real Life. It’s unfair of me to wish that the story of this graphic novel better reflected what everyone’s been forced to talk about over the past few months, but because the world has moved past this book, even though it’s just been released, […]

Blacksad: Amarillo

The latest album in the series, Blacksad: Amarillo, is the fifth, after Blacksad: A Silent Hell and the three reprinted as simply Blacksad. All are gorgeously painted explorations of classic American tropes told by Europeans (the series is written by Juan Diaz Canales and illustrated by Juanjo Guarnido), which gives the series its unique approach. Well, that and the anthropomorphic black panther detective who’s the title character. All the cast members are animals of some kind, often selected for an […]

Confessions, a Japanese School Horror Novel

Confessions is a short horror novel translated from the Japanese. It’s got a middle school setting, so manga fans might find it of interest, particularly if they enjoy creepy, behavior-driven stories like Another or Nijigahara Holograph. Each of the six chapters presents another viewpoint on the same set of events. We open with the teacher saying goodbye to her class on the last day of school — but instead of the usual good wishes, she announces her retirement. She’s leaving […]
