Museum of Mistakes: The Fart Party Collection

Before she published Drinking at the Movies and The Infinite Wait and Other Stories, Julia Wertz’s autobiographical comics were published as the “regrettably known” Fart Party. The now-out-of-print first two Fart Party volumes, as well as material that would have made up a third book, all dating from 2005-2012, are now available as Museum of Mistakes: The Fart Party Collection. Also in the book are Wertz’s early work, before her style developed into the familiar, blocky, black-anchored panels; behind-the-scenes material, […]

Lady Killer #1

I’ve long admired the work of Joëlle Jones, who’s drawn, among many other things, You Have Killed Me, Token, and 12 Reasons Why I Love Her. Now, she’s drawing AND cowriting a new miniseries with long-time collaborator Jamie S. Rich. Lady Killer will launch in January from Dark Horse Comics. (The series is going to be five issues.) It’s tag-lined as “Betty Draper meets Hannibal” because it’s a story, set in the 1960s, about a homemaker who’s also an assassin […]

Poorcraft Sequel Now on Kickstarter

I’ve previously recommended Poorcraft: The Funnybook Fundamentals of Living Well on Less, an advice-heavy graphic novel by C. Spike Trotman and Diana Nock covering all kinds of personal finance information. Now, there’s a sequel. Poorcraft: Wish You Were Here changes things up. It’s again illustrated by Nock, but this time, it’s written by Ryan Estrada, a seasoned traveler who’s going to give us advice on vacation and travel on a budget. Spike returns to run the Kickstarter, which has various […]

Guardians of the Galaxy Featurette Clips

Although the home video release is next month, tomorrow marks the release of Guardians of the Galaxy digitally. And to promote it, Marvel has been releasing a ton of clips from the extra features. Here they are, starting with the Blu-ray release trailer. (I found it interesting that instead of critics, they use quotes from celebrities. A new frontier in marketing?) Here’s director and co-writer James Gunn talking about his vision, with the prelude of a fake video game. Of […]

Yen Press Rescues Kaoru Mori’s Emma

This was announced last month at the New York Comic Con, I think, but the book is now available for pre-order. I’m thrilled to hear that the manga Emma is coming back into print from Yen Press. They currently release A Bride’s Story by the same author, Kaoru Mori, as well as a one-shot of her shorter pieces, Anything and Something. Emma was previously published in the US from 2006-2009 by CMX, the now-defunct manga imprint of DC Comics. It’s […]

Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League Announced

As a followup to the Lego Batman movie, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced that Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League will be available on Blu-ray (list price $24.98), DVD ($19.98), and digital on February 10, 2015. The purchase version of the movie will come with an exclusive Batzarro minifigure while supplies last. The direct-to-home-video movie is described as “action-packed and hilarious”, and I have to admit, based on the trailer below, the alternate Justice League […]

Mike Dawson Ponders Raising a Daughter

Mike Dawson (Freddie & Me, Troop 142, Angie Bongiolatti) has posted a thought-provoking comic about raising a daughter. The strip takes off from this shirt about being a “feminist father”. Dawson continues to ponder what it means to fill that role, given certain standard jokes and expectations. Much as I dislike the attitude that too many men have that equal rights don’t matter until you have a daughter (or that equal marriage rights don’t matter until your kid comes out, […]

Kawaii Manga: Adorable!

Kawaii Manga: Adorable! is a colorful, heavy book that contains a selection of walk-throughs, showing how 22 different images (from 16 artists) were built digitally. They’re all loosely “kawaii”, or super-cute, and manga- or anime-influenced. (Seriously, the thick paper over 350 pages makes for a hefty tome. This isn’t a “carry it around with you” book.) The sections are “Cute Girls”, “Happy Time”, “Sweet Dessert”, “Super Adventure”, and “Magical World”. Each image begins with a short paragraph explaining the character. […]
