Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic

Review by KC Carlson Depending on your worldview, the new Watchmen Complete Motion Comic DVD is: The graphic novel version of Cliff Notes, or more directly, the “For Dummies” series. Both series have become synonymous for the lazy person’s method of learning about literature without having to go through the tedious work of actually reading it yourself. A true milestone event! (Although it should be noted that watching this entire production will take over five hours of your time, and […]

Wonder Woman: Virginia Madsen on Comics, Gender, Parenting

The latest in the series of studio-produced interviews promoting the direct-to-video Wonder Woman animated movie has been released: it’s a conversation with Virginia Madsen, who voices Queen Hippolyta. Since it’s promotional, there’s not a lot of striking content, although it’s cute to see Madsen talk about her teenage son and his take on things. I did find these two exchanges, near the end, interesting: Question: Were/are you a comic-book reader? Madsen: I was not a comic book reader, but my […]

Spirit Promotion Continues

Thanksgiving weekend is the traditional opening of the blockbuster Christmas movie season, which means not only new films but new trailers and more promotion. The Spirit, for example, which opens on Christmas Day, has released a new poster, shown here, as well as a couple of videos. There’s a mashup video combining elements of the trailers from The Spirit, Punisher: War Zone (due December 5), and Transporter 3 (out on Wednesday). Pretty cool, with neat music. You’ll probably want to […]

Comics Now! Magazine

Comics Now! is a new quarterly magazine put together by some of the folks behind the Comic Geek Speak podcast. (Editor in Chief is Bryan Deemer; Editor is Kevin Freeman; and Peter Rios is the Assistant Editor.) It “striv[es] to provide fair and equal coverage to ALL segments of the comic book marketplace, mantaining a ‘FAN to FAN’ perspective, and by striving to promoting [sic] the readability of comic books over the collectibility.” Those are all great goals, and they […]

Making Comics

Scott McCloud revolutionized discussion of the comic medium with his instant classic Understanding Comics. It gave many a new way to talk about comics, the beginning of a language with which to discuss and analyze the form. Now, a decade later, he’s created Making Comics, promising “storytelling secrets of comics, manga, and graphic novels”. Instead of theory, this book is about practice. And it’s not just about linework or anatomy or common elements of popular genres or styles… it’s about […]

Marvel Digital Comics Relaunch

Marvel’s trying again with digital comics. I’m pleased to see that She-Hulk is one of the titles getting the promotional push, since it’s one of the two titles from them I follow. (The other is Young Avengers.) Others featured in the launch are Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (what could have been a good book damaged by a poorly thought-out crossover), Captain America, and their kid book Franklin Richards. The user experience could be improved: the control panel is too confusing and […]

Astonishing X-Men: Dangerous

The Marvel Knights line of motion comic DVDs releases its first sequel, with Astonishing X-Men: Dangerous set following the events of Astonishing X-Men: Gifted, the first title released. This DVD is based on the Astonishing X-Men: Dangerous book, collecting Astonishing X-Men #7–12 by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday. In that story, the Danger Room becomes sentient and tries to take revenges on its “oppressors” by sending a Sentinel after them. It feels to this viewer as though I’ve come into […]
