Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths

Guest review by Ed Sizemore Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths is the semi-autobiographical story (in the afterward, Shigeru Mizuki tells us 90% of it is true) of Japanese soldiers stationed on New Britain Island in the Papua New Guinean Archipelago during Word War II. Mizuki’s stand-in is Private Second Class Maruyama. Life on the tropical island is hard for the Japanese soldiers. They battle hunger, malaria, abusive squad leaders, and finally US fighting forces. One thing that stands out when […]

Perhapanauts Continues With New Tales Webcomic

It’s been over a year since we’ve seen new Perhapanauts stories (with the Molly’s Story one-shot in February 2010), which is much too long for this enjoyable series about paranormal investigators. Now creators Todd Dezago and Craig Rosseau have launched the webcomic Tales From the Perhaps, alternate versions of their characters by other people, as a recurring online feature. Dezago describes the feature as a webcomic (of sorts) with perhapanauts tales from deep inside the perhaps, that vortex of space […]

Marvel Motion Comics Come to Blu-Ray

In conjunction with the release of the Spider-Woman: Agent of S.W.O.R.D. motion comic DVD on June 14, Shout! Factory has announced a Blu-ray release, exclusive to Best Buy. The “special edition” pairs the material from the Spider-Woman DVD with the previously released Iron Man: Extremis. At the time of this writing, Best Buy doesn’t have a listing for the Blu-ray, so I don’t know what the price is expected to be. The regular DVD has a suggested price of $14.97, […]

Can You Believe 10 Years of Smallville?

Warner Bros. Digital Distribution has made the first episode of each season of Smallville, 10 season premieres, available for free download on iTunes, to promote the upcoming series finale. That last episode, “Finale”, is scheduled to air Friday, May 13. I was just surprised to realize that this show ran for ten seasons! Watching this clip from the final season, I found myself wondering: where’s the high school? What’s with the newspaper? It’s obviously been quite a while since I […]

Arisa Volume 1

I’d previously passed by this series, the newest from Natsumi Ando (Kitchen Princess), because of its lame-duck status, as one of the last releases from the now-departed Del Rey Manga. I recently picked up Arisa volume 1 on a whim (to fill out a mail order, if you must know), and now I’m glad i did, because it was a gripping and enjoyable read. At first, it reminded me of Papillon. Both are about twin sisters, reunited after significant time […]

Just the Usual Superpowers: A Superhero Girl Collection

I’m breaking one of my rules here, because I am a total Faith Erin Hicks fangirl. I love her work. She even got me to like a zombie comic. So even though this collection of her webcomic The Adventures of Superhero Girl is only available from her at convention appearances, I’m still talking about it. (Normally, I only review comics that are easily available to readers.) Just the Usual Superpowers collects the first 55 Adventures of Superhero Girl strips. (The […]

Young Justice Comes to DVD in Limited Form

From my perspective, the poor Young Justice cartoon can’t do anything right. I wasn’t impressed at the “all boys together” approach, and I gave up after being put off by the way the creator responded. Now that it’s coming out on DVD, I thought I might give it another try, but the one-disc release is so limited that I’m not sure it’s worth it. Season 1 Volume 1 is due out July 19, containing four episodes (two of which make […]
