Exit Wounds

Exit Wounds by Rutu Modan uses a Tintin-like “clear line” style to tell a modern story of the effects of terrorism and the search for a life of one’s own. In Tel Aviv, Koby drives a taxi cab. He’s been estranged from his father, so he’s not sure how to feel when a soldier tells him his father might be the unidentified victim of a cafeteria suicide bombing. The soldier, Numi, tries to talk Koby first into a DNA test […]

Interview With David Gallaher

David Gallaher, writer of winning Zuda webcomic High Moon, was kind enough to answer my questions over the weekend. What does winning mean for you? Were you offered an online publishing deal? If so, what is DC paying? What are you giving them in return? Winning this competition means that Steve Ellis (artist), Scott O. Brown (letterer), and I can finish the first High Moon story on the Zuda site, which is really rather exciting. High Moon is a story […]

Minx Selling More in Direct Market?

David Welsh responds to my recent Minx overview by saying: I can understand the desire to quash the notion that the books actually sold better in specialty comic shops than bookstores, because that certainly couldn’t have been the desired outcome. Well, it might have. That result makes sense, once you look at the factors involved. Bookstore buyers aren’t afraid of manga and are eager to carry a full range of graphic novels. The same for librarians, who have a good […]

Print Retailer Magazine to End

ICv2 reports that Comics & Games Retailer, a monthly industry trade magazine, will cease publication in January with the February 2008-labeled issue. The business model was free to retailers with costs paid by ads purchased to reach this target audience directly. My assumption, based on no direct knowledge, is thus not enough advertisers wanted to buy ads to reach that audience. In the current comic market, it’s easy enough to reach both retailers and the eventual consumer with the same […]

Happy Holiday Webcomic LinkBlogging

Scott at Polite Dissent continues his yearly tradition of posting a new Christmas-themed comic cover every day for the month of December. So does Dave Carter! I’m sure David Gallaher and Steve Ellis are happy that their webcomic High Moon was the first winner of the Zuda monthly competition. (Odd phrasing from the editor, in a post no longer available: “even we did not know who was going to win it in the end.” Did they expect to know ahead […]

Interestingly, Karen Berger when interviewed a year ago about the line, said there would be seven Minx releases in 2007. Which book went missing? Due in 2008 They do plan seven books for 2008, including work by Joelle Jones (12 Reasons Why I Love Her) and Steve Rolston (One Bad Day). I’m more excited about […]

Kimmie66

Aaron Alexovich both writes and draws Kimmie66 (the first Minx book that has allowed a writer-artist to do both), a near-future tale of a world lived in virtual reality. Telly, the goth teen girl lead, has received a suicide note from her best friend, a person she never knew in real life, which leads her to ponder the nature of existence and how you really know a person. Her conclusion: It’s such a pain in the butt when you don’t […]

Confessions of a Blabbermouth

I had high hopes due to the premise — teenage blogger can’t cope with mom’s new boyfriend — and the co-writer, Louise Carey, who is an actual 15-year-old girl and daughter of established writer Mike Carey. I was sadly disappointed with Confessions of a Blabbermouth. And to tell you why, I have to spoil the book, so if you don’t wanna, skip to the next post. The book starts in a very cartoony fashion, with Tasha, our Teenage Heroine, throwing […]
