Someone at Archie Took the Summer of 2013 Off

KC’s been indexing the Archie digests, and he ran across this oddity. Can you tell the difference between these two copies? The one on the left is B&V Friends Double Digest #233, published June 2013. The one on the right is #234, published August 2013. The contents of each are different, as are the back cover and spine design, but someone really wasn’t paying attention to the cover art. On ComiXology, #234 has been given a different cover. I have […]

In keeping with the tradition of the big summer event, Titan Comics has announced that they will publish a five-part weekly crossover in August among their ongoing Doctor Who comic titles. Their “Year One” will conclude with issue #15 in each title, followed by this weekly event, “Four Doctors”, written by Paul Cornell and illustrated by Neil Edwards. More Count Spatula Comics by Andi Watson

I liked Princess Decomposia and Count Spatula so much that I was thrilled to discover that there were more comics about them! First, there will be a short story in Defend Comics, a Free Comic Book Day giveaway benefiting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. This year, that day is Saturday, May 2. Next, there’s the blog tour Andi Watson participated in recently. At several of the sites, he contributed illustrated fantasy recipes, such as these: underworld dirt pie rock […]

Avengers Shill Razors in Digital Comic

If you want to read a new movie Avengers adventure before the film comes out in May, I’m not sure this will totally fulfill your needs, but it did answer a question I had. But I’m getting ahead of myself. To promote the Fusion ProGlide razor with FlexBall Technology, Gillette announced “four super-charged prototype razors inspired by Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, and Thor”. Here’s the video showing the “Avengers-inspired technology”. (That video has been removed, so here’s an […]

Watching Your Life on Stage: A Fun Home Coda

Alison Bechdel created the important and inspiring Fun Home as a look back at her father’s life and secrets. The graphic novel is now a Broadway musical (which would be amazing to see), described as featuring “Alison at three different ages, revealing memories of her uniquely dysfunctional family — her mother, brothers, and volatile, brilliant, enigmatic father — that connect with her in surprising new ways. This intimate and emotional theatrical experience is performed entirely in the round… [it’s] about […]

An Unusual Convention Encounter Comic

Plenty of people have made comics about getting grumpy behind their convention table, due to the stress of attending a show and working in the industry, but Matthew Southworth’s piece at The Stranger has an unusual twist that winds up being a great reminder of why artists do it. We could all use a reminder of that young enthusiasm. Plus, I love the elegant way the coloring keeps the reader aware of the distinctions.

Julius Schwartz’s First Signature on His Book

Because I am doing my best to post daily… here’s a little trivia picture for you. Before editor emeritus Julius Schwartz passed away, he wrote a (now out of print) biography called Man of Two Worlds: My Life in Science Fiction and Comics. KC, of course, pre-ordered a copy, and it arrived right before we were to go to a convention where Mr. Schwartz was appearing. Since the two of them had worked together before the older man’s retirement, we […]
