Comic/Media Art Mash-Ups

Old friend Brian Saner Lamken has done something creative — he’s selected famous images from superhero comics and found media pictures that allows him to graft the two together. Like this take on the classic Action Comics #1 cover, put together with Superman Returns. He’s calling the technique Panel to Frame. A Valuable Reminder for Comic Women

The following sketch was done for me by Rob Walton (Ragmop). I thought it was from the one and only Philadelphia Comicfest in 1993, but googling suggests it was more likely 1996. Release dates confirm that, since the Ragmop comic started in 1995. As you can see, it says “We women have to stick together.” That’s his character Alice on the left, and well, me on the right. I’d stopped by his table to tell him how I liked his […]

A Comic That Inspires: Erika Moen’s “I Want to Live”

Depression and suicide have obviously been on many people’s minds lately due to Robin Williams’ passing. In thinking about such subjects, Erika Moen, author of the encouragingly positive webcomic Oh Joy, Sex Toy, has created the affecting (I cried) and powerful strip “I Want to Live”. In keeping with her previous project, the autobiographical DAR: A Super Girly Top Secret Comic Diary, this comic is heavily revealing. It may be the best thing I read today.

Just Because We Have Computer Lettering, You Shouldn’t Fill the Page With Text

Coming out on Wednesday from Action Lab Entertainment is the first issue of a new series, Midnight Tiger, by Ray-Anthony Height, co-written by DeWayne Feenstra. This is the first panel on page 3, taking up 2/3 of the page. While a new series and concept needs a certain amount of exposition, this is way too much text to dump on the reader. It’s physically hard to read, with those large caption boxes and dialogue balloons. I haven’t read the whole […]

Read a Cat Comic for World Cat Day

Twitter says it’s World Cat Day, so what better time to remind you to read A Stray in the Woods, Alison Wilgus’ spooky webcomic. Originally, the story was user-driven, but now that it’s completed, you can find out what’s going on in one sitting. And her cats are so fluid and design-y and lovely to view! The problem with not having to wait, though, is that you might lose the dreamy, mystical feel to the story, so pace yourself. You […]
