How to Break Into Writing Comics

Breaking into comics as an artist is relatively easy. You make up some samples, you show them around, you take the advice you’re given, and you persist until you get work or find something more responsible to do. It’s hard work, but it’s a simple plan to follow. But breaking in as a writer… that’s difficult. There are a lot more wannabes than ever will find work in the field, everyone thinks writing is easy, and most people have ideas […]

2008 Isotope Minicomics Award Submissions Open

I’m pleased and honored to once again serve as a judge for the Isotope Award For Excellence in Mini-Comics, which has begun accepting submissions for this year’s award. “There is honestly nothing that makes me happier each year than to get the opportunity to help spotlight a creator who is toiling in the underground making something wonderful,” said James Sime, proprietor of Isotope, the comic book lounge in San Francisco. “And I know that many of you out there are […]

Interview With Tania del Rio on Sabrina Plans, OEL Manga

I asked Tania del Rio (Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Mangaka America) some questions recently about what she’s been doing. Q: In some of the coverage of the Tokyopop OEL situation, Lindsay Cibos said that she was the new artist on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Is that the case? A: I’ve been writing and drawing Sabrina pretty much nonstop without a break for the last 4 years. When I moved from New York to Los Angeles, I realized the transition was […]

Darwyn Cooke’s Next Project: Parker

IDW will be publishing four graphic novels by Darwyn Cooke based on the early books in the series of Parker novels by Richard Stark (aka Donald Westlake). The first GN is due out in mid-2009. The announcement was made at a con press conference, a lovely idea that more companies should arrange. Only not necessarily at San Diego, since everyone is aiming to break news there (and since I don’t go). My husband KC and I are huge Darwyn Cooke […]

New Platinum Wowio Contracts Discussed; Goodbye, Wowio

WOWIO worked for everyone: free comics for readers and real payments for creators of 50 cents a PDF download. (I previously interviewed Bill Williams of Lone Star Press about how well it worked for them.) Then they were acquired by generally shady Platinum. Even if you don’t mind the ethics, Platinum lost over $5 million last year (link no longer available), mainly because their business plan appears to be “acquire comic properties, don’t publish them, hope someone gives us lots […]

Keith Knight on Complete K Chronicles

(This interview was originally published in PiQ #4, July 2008.) If he’s not the hardest working man in comics, Keith Knight’s definitely one of the top ten. He’s the creator of The K Chronicles, the Harvey and Glyph Award-winning weekly comic strip, as well as the weekly editorial cartoon (Th)ink. At the beginning of May, he launched a new syndicated daily called The Knight Life. That’s in addition to his regular work for MAD and ESPN magazines and, oh yeah, […]

Interview With Todd Dezago on Perhapanauts

(This interview was originally published in PiQ #2, May 2008.) The Perhapanauts are a group of investigators of the weird who are themselves paranormal. The team’s made up of Big, a sasquatch; Molly, a ghost; MG, a smart guy with a secret; Arisa, the telepathic team leader; and Choopie, short for Chupacabras, a partially evolved goat vampire (and comic relief). With its blend of adventure, humor, characters, horror, and astounding abilities, the series is an entertaining, high-adrenaline read great for […]
