The largest English-language manga publisher, Viz Media, has announced that they are launching a line (not an imprint, but a partnership) to cover the one genre of manga they haven’t yet tackled: yaoi (boys’ love). The website is just a […]

JManga Responds to Feedback, Drops Prices, Discusses Future Plans

When JManga launched in August, many early users were impressed with the idea of the site — the ability to access Japanese series that would otherwise remain unavailable in the U.S. — but dismayed by the price points and complicated subscription purchase system. Now, JManga has responded to the major complaint by temporarily lowering their prices. For the month of October, they’ve announced a sale: books that were previously the equivalent of $8.99 are now $4.99, while $19.98 books are […]

Tokyopop Planning the Return of Hetalia #3?

Late Friday evening, a post went up on the Tokyopop Facebook page asking an interesting question: if there is a way to bring you Hetalia V. 3 but it’s a bit more limited than back in the old days, would you be interested? (I know that’s vague — not trying to be coy but wanted to see the level of enthusiasm before I’m able to get into more specifics). If you “like” this, I’ll take that to mean you’d be […]

This Month’s Manga Moveable Feast: Fumi Yoshinaga, My Favorite

The newest Manga Moveable Feast is dedicated to my favorite manga author, Fumi Yoshinaga. I’ve already reviewed most of her books, including explicit yaoi, tamer boys’ love, school soap opera, restaurant reviews, and the not easily categorizable Antique Bakery. That diversity is one of the things I love most about her work. That, and her beautiful line and distinctively expressive characters. If you’re looking for a good starting point, I highly recommend the single-volume book of short stories All My […]

A Timeline of Josei Manga in the U.S.

Sadly, putting this together has reminded me of how much we’ve lost over the past decade as most manga publishers with significant josei output have gone out of business. For more information on josei manga, which is manga aimed at adult female readers, check out this 2008 overview article or this post about examples of the genre. Broadly speaking, there are two types of josei that we’ve seen in the U.S.: that of interest because of its subject matter (such […]

When Is Dark Horse Releasing Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service?

When I started reading The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, I liked it, and I was thrilled to find a horror manga I enjoyed. So after I read the latest book, volume 11 (one of my best manga of last year), I wanted to make sure I pre-ordered a copy of volume 12. In February, I placed an order with Amazon. At that time, volume 12 was due out later that month. It didn’t arrive — instead, a new date of […]
