Warner Brothers Talks About Plans for UltraViolet, Flixster

Warner’s new digital movie scheme, UltraViolet, gets an article in the NY Times positioning it as a way for the studio to compete with rentals, especially Netflix. This strikes me as misguided. People who simply want to see a film for a buck or two for the night are not the same audience as those who want to own a copy. Wait, let me revise that — from the studio’s perspective, buying a plastic disc isn’t ownership, it’s just a […]

X-Men: First Class on Blu-ray

Since I thought I remembered the movie pretty well, for my first home video viewing of X-Men: First Class, I chose “X Marks the Spot” mode, which interrupts the film with interview inserts (such as director/co-screenwriter Matthew Vaughn explaining his goals for the film) and behind-the-scenes footage (including some special effects tricks and the design concepts behind the credits). Other participants are production designer Chris Seagers, producers Bryan Singer and Lauren Shuler Donner, visual effects designer John Dykstra, and specialized […]

Captain America: The First Avenger

I thought I’d already reviewed this movie when it came out in theaters this summer, but apparently not. I enjoyed watching Captain America: The First Avenger, but I didn’t have much to say about it. Since everyone’s moved on to wondering about Marvel’s The Avengers, this film feels a little like marking time, like a preview of the thing you really want to see, as indicated by the subtitle and the movie’s final “bonus” scene. The production company stuck closer […]

Cars 2

I was curious to see this latest Pixar movie. It’s the worst-reviewed of any of their films, and the first one in a long time that KC and I didn’t see in the theater, knowing it would be available on home video soon enough. And here it is! Cars 2 wasn’t what I expected, and I’m glad I saw it, but I recommend it only with caveats, so that viewers are aware how it differs from the usual Pixar film. […]

Young Justice Season 1 Volume 2

As with the first volume, Young Justice Season 1 Volume 2 is a bare-bones, just-the-episodes disc. I didn’t care much for the first few episodes, but I keep hearing that the show continued to improve over its run, so I figured I’d try these next four and see what I thought. “Schooled” begins with Superboy (Nolan North) and Superman (Nolan North) facing off during a school bus rescue, as Superboy clearly wants more of his mentor’s attention than he’s getting. […]

New UltraViolet Digital Copies Annoying Some Customers

Green Lantern was the second home video release to carry the UltraViolet cloud-based authentication system for providing digital copies across devices. (Horrible Bosses is the first; both came out the same week, but HB was on Tuesday and GL on Friday.) When I tried UltraViolet, I first had a complete failure, but once my Flixster account was reset, I found the process smooth and easy (aside from having to install yet another application and set up yet another username and […]

Justice League: Doom Trailer

Casting information on the next original DC animated movie, Justice League: Doom has already been released. Now, here’s the official trailer, showing Vandal Savage assembling the Legion of Doom to take down the Justice League. Justice League: Doom is due out early next year. I admit, there’s something about seeing all the big-name heroes teamed up that seems like a lot of fun, especially with the classic voices involved.
