Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?

Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? is another teen favorite of mine recaptured on disc by Warner Archive. I really shouldn’t have been watching this murder-comedy-romance at that age, but that’s part of the fun of rediscovering something you think you know — the nuances are all more visible to me now. And still timely! A large, blustery, self-centered Robert Morley is a London food critic and magazine editor whose doctor has told him that due to his […]

Justice League: Doom Pictures and Casting News

The original DC Animated film for 2012 will be Justice League: Doom, based on JLA: Tower of Babel, written by Mark Waid. That’s the storyline where the Justice League is taken down using Batman’s secret contingency plans to exploit each member’s weaknesses. The voice casting news for this film is great, bringing back plenty of familiar names and old favorites to play the characters, including: Superman: Tim Daly (The Animated Series, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) Green Lantern: Nathan Fillion […]

Under the Rainbow

It’s 1938, and Rollo (Cork Hubbert) dreams of making it to Hollywood. The good-heartedness underlying the slapstick goofiness is summed up early on, as Rollo, when told his dreams of making it in Hollywood are “just too big”, responds, “There’s no dream too big, and no dreamer too small.” He gets a chance when he becomes one of 150 little people rounded up to play munchkins in The Wizard of Oz. Under the Rainbow purports to show what happens when […]

First Batman: Year One Video Clip Released

Since the next DC Universe original animated movie, Batman: Year One, is due out next month, promotion has started with the release of this video clip, showing Batman (Ben McKenzie) interrupting Carmine Falcone’s (Alex Rocco) dinner party. I thought the shadow effects were neat. Batman: Year One will be released October 18 at a list price of $24.98 for the Blu-ray Combo Pack (with DVD and digital copy). New this time around is the opportunity to download-for-purchase online a week […]

Any Wednesday

I enjoyed early-60s Jane Fonda in Sunday in New York so much that I figured I’d pick up another of her mainstream sex comedies when Warner Archive had a sale. Any Wednesday was made three years later (1966) than the previous, and accordingly, Fonda is now playing not a virgin, but a mistress. But first, she’s a kind of babysitter for art, a gallery employee sent to accompany paintings rented for ritzy parties. There she meets “business tycoon” John Cleves […]

Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers

Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers, the latest Marvel Knights Animation motion comic, came out earlier this week on DVD. The four-episode story was originally released online last spring. Loki (voiced by David Blair) has taken over as King of Asgard, imprisoning his brother Thor (Daniel Thorn), and the story consists of his interior and exterior monologuing. He ponders his role now and flashes back every so often to moments from his childhood where he was downtrodden. People talk a lot […]

More on Captain America TV Movies on DVD

As I reported last month, the 1979 Captain America TV movie and its sequel, Captain America II: Death Too Soon, will be coming to DVD as a double feature. This disc will be a very affordable $14.93 (list price). Shout! Factory will be putting this out, and the release date has been updated to October 18, just over a month away. Starring Reb Brown as Steve Rogers, these films update the setting to the then-current 70s, giving Captain America a […]

Rocketeer on Blu-ray Announced

Just in time for Christmas, Disney has announced The Rocketeer on Blu-ray in a 20th anniversary edition. Release date is December 13. The film is a cult favorite, about mechanic and test pilot Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell), his curmudgeonly buddy (Alan Arkin), and his Bettie Page-like girlfriend (Jennifer Connelly) using a jetpack to fight Nazis in Hollywood. One of the bad guys is Timothy Dalton, playing an Errol Flynn-type star with secret leanings. I didn’t realize that director Joe Johnston […]
