The JManga portal (link no longer available), a website selling English translated manga online direct from 39 Japanese publishers who form the Digital Comic Association, is now available (after being discussed for the last month). Features include 168 listed series, many of which are new to the U.S. Free previews Author interviews Manga sorted by genre — shojo, josei (both of which include yaoi), shonen, seinen, and kodomo (new to me, that term means “kids”) — and then subdivided under […]

A Timeline of Josei Manga in the U.S.

Sadly, putting this together has reminded me of how much we’ve lost over the past decade as most manga publishers with significant josei output have gone out of business. For more information on josei manga, which is manga aimed at adult female readers, check out this 2008 overview article or this post about examples of the genre. Broadly speaking, there are two types of josei that we’ve seen in the U.S.: that of interest because of its subject matter (such […]

Sailor Moon Returns to Print, Manga Fans Rejoice

A very important manga — historically, Sailor Moon broke open the U.S. market for manga in bookstores and among girls — is returning to print from Kodansha USA. Here’s an excerpt from their press release: Brand new deluxe editions of the acclaimed series will be released by Kodansha USA’s Kodansha Comics imprint in September 2011. Out of print for six years, SAILOR MOON re-launches along with Takeuchi’s two-volume prequel series CODENAME: SAILOR V, in print in the US for the […]

Manga Links Worth Thinking About

Shaenon K. Garrity (link no longer available) wrote an excellent overview of those little artist side notes found mostly in shojo manga. She provides a number of hilarious examples to support the idea that if you Read enough of these notes, however, and you get the impression that shojo manga artists are both incredibly boring and completely insane. I was impressed that she did an entire column on the format without even mentioning the overused “I’m so sorry my art […]

The Dreaming Collection

Queenie Chan‘s atmospheric boarding school mystery The Dreaming has been reprinted in a single-volume bind-up of the three previous books. This re-release puts a new edition of the story on the shelves while the upcoming movie is being funded and entering production. Regardless of the motives, this single-volume edition is a superior way to read this suspense-filled tale. (And the original intent of the author; the publisher requested it be released in three separate books, which required some editing and […]

Suppli Volumes 4 & 5

When Suppli volume 1 came out three years ago, I tried it. And even though I am always looking for josei manga (aimed at women, not girls) and although Suppli was well-recommended, it didn’t click for me at the time. I think I was too afraid of the protagonist’s fear, the idea of being alone with nothing but an unrewarding job, to want to read about it for entertainment. Now that Tokyopop has returned to the series with an omnibus […]

Publishers Threaten Manga Scanlation Sites

I just realized I never covered last month’s “news” that publishers don’t like manga scan sites. These sites — of which the best-known are OneManga and MangaFox, but searching “free manga” on Google will turn up many more — post large numbers of manga pages to read online for free. They’re often called “scanlation” sites, after the original purpose of translating manga not yet available in English based on cleaned-up scans of the Japanese pages, but they frequently post scanned […]

Hetalia Cosplay Contest

Tokyopop is looking for costume pictures to include in their september release of Hetalia. It’s a manga, originally a webcomic, in which various countries become characters for historical satire. It’s reportedly got a large fan following already. 12 cosplay winners will have their photos included in the book. Oddly, there’s no mention of whether they’re going to print in color, which I think would matter. Black-and-white reproductions may not show off detail. To enter, you have to post your photo […]
