Comics for Kids: Disney Moves to Boom!, Henson to Archaia

Gemstone let go of the Disney comic license in the U.S. — leading to questions like “how can any company not succeed with the most popular characters ever?” — but not to worry. Boom! Studios will be releasing Disney comics beginning in September. The format will be the same as their other kids’ comics — 24 pages for $2.99. Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck stories should make great companions for the existing Pixar and Muppet Disney licenses, already published to […]

Aria Will Return in November

In contrast to my pessimism, it looks like Aria Book 5 will appear after all. (An earlier offering of the book was cancelled at the beginning of the year.) Brigid got an email from Tokyopop Marketing Director Marco Pavia saying that volume 5 will be out in November. Of course, plans (and the economy) might change by then, but for now, watch for the September Previews catalog for ordering information.

Viz Standardizes Shonen Jump, Shojo Beat Prices at $9.99

Thanks to a reader comment in my post on Tokyopop’s varying pricing, I was made aware that Viz appears to be standardizing on higher prices later this year. Previously, Shonen Jump titles were $7.99, while Shojo Beat books were $8.99. (A discrepancy that caused some conversation back in 2006. In that post, Christopher Butcher predicted this price rise, three years early.) I checked out some series I follow on Amazon. The only Shonen Jump book I buy regularly is Hikaru […]

Aria Volume 4

After some trouble, I finally found a copy of the latest chapter of this gorgeous series. As volume 4 begins, it’s summer on Aqua, and Akari and her fellow gondolier trainees Aika and Alice vacation on a small island. Yes, it’s a bathing suit chapter, but the clothes are reasonable, and instead of body parts, the emphasis is on the fun and relaxation of the beach. The younger girls have never swum in an ocean before, and their feelings of […]

Best Manga of 2008

For the purpose of this post, I’m using a highly idiosyncratic definition of “best”, based mostly on what I looked forward to and enjoyed re-reading. And if some sources can publish “Best of 2008” lists in early November, I figure as long as mine’s out by the end of January, I’m good. I have a few subcategories, under which I’ve ranked a maximum of five titles, with #1 being best. Links take you to my reviews. Best Completed Manga These […]

Sand Chronicles

If you’re looking for shojo teen romance with more substance than the usual high school hijinks, Sand Chronicles by Hinako Ashihara is the perfect series for you. Sand Chronicles is Ann’s story, told in flashback to key seasons in her life. At the age of 12, she and her mother move from Tokyo to her grandparents’ rural village. Her parents have divorced due to her father’s debts, and her mother is having trouble coping, with hospital stays for overwork and […]

Parasyte

This has been quite a year for realizing that rules don’t apply. I used to say “I don’t like horror comics”, but I should say, “I don’t like most horror comics”, because I enjoy Parasyte. That’s because the scary element — a body-invading controller — is a perfect metaphor for teenage alienation and discomfort with one’s own body. When alien worms come to possess humans, Shinichi is saved by his Walkman. He uses the cord as a makeshift tourniquet, preventing […]
