Supergirl Season 1 Now Available

The first season of Supergirl is now available in two ways: You can stream the episodes for free via the CW website, in conjunction with the channel (that’s acquired the show for season 2) re-airing the episodes. Or you can buy the entire season, 20 episodes, now on Blu-ray or DVD. The Blu-ray also comes with a digital UltraViolet copy. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment gave me a free copy of the Blu-ray set for this review, but even if they […]

Lucifer Season 1 Out Later This Month

If you’re like me and you enjoy watching Lucifer, you’ll want to know that the first season will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on August 23. Even if you haven’t tried it yet, you should check it out as a fun twist on the lightly supernatural procedural. Although the premise is the same as the Vertigo comic — a bored Lucifer leaves Hell and starts running a nightclub in Los Angeles, accompanied by his demonic assistant, who tends bar […]

How Do You “Collect” Something Dependent on Someone’s Electronic Server?

Poor Valiant. They try so hard but come out with such pedestrian, mediocre comics. Yet I admire their willingness to keep plugging and trying new methods to get attention, and more importantly, readers. Their latest announcement, though, just made me scratch my head. Valiant is launching a channel on Quidd, “the world’s first platform for collecting and trading emojis, stickers, and cards.” (iOS only.) I know this is a fogey thing to say, but I have no idea how you […]

Ellen Forney’s Next Book Follows Up Marbles

Fantagraphics has announced that they will be publishing Ellen Forney’s next book, Rock Steady: Brilliant Advice From My Bipolar Life. It’s termed a “graphic novel/self-help book” and a companion to her previous graphic memoir, Marbles: Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, and Me. I really liked Marbles for exploring how to balance artistic creativity with treatment of a misunderstood mental condition. Rock Steady continues in that vein, portraying Forney’s advice and stories about maintaining stability. Rock Steady, “a survival guide of tips, tricks […]

Red Sonja Expands Motion Comics for Shout! Factory

When motion comics started, several publishers were doing them, but then Marvel ran away with the format, putting out a number of X-Men and Wolverine titles with Shout! Factory. I haven’t seen any yet this year — although I admit, I’m not a huge fan so I don’t pay close attention — so I was surprised to note that last week, Red Sonja: Queen of Plagues was released. For one thing, I was surprised to see them still coming out […]

Ali’s House by Marguerite Dabaie and Tom Hart Syndicated

I first heard of Ali’s House, a newspaper comic strip about an Arab-American family by Marguerite Dabaie and Tom Hart, when I read Hart’s The Sequential Artists Workshop Guide to Creating Professional Comic Strips. Hart uses their experiences working together as examples of his points. From what I can piece together, the strip was originally developed in 2008 for King Features Syndicate. The pitch was that human nature, particularly in a family, is universal, although the cultural trappings may be […]

Scooby-Doo! and WWE: Curse of the Speed Demon

Sccoby-Doo WrestleMania Mystery must have done well, since there’s now another cartoon team-up of the two properties. Only this time, they’re racing! Off-road! In “extreme” vehicles customized to reflect their drivers, kind of like a wrestling-flavored Wacky Racers. ScoobyDoo! and WWE: Curse of the Speed Demon is out this Tuesday, August 9. Los Matadores (El Torito, Diego, and Fernando) drive a truck with a giant bull head, for example, complete with ridiculous horns. Rusev and Lana have the “Moscow Express”, […]

Friday Barnes, Under Suspicion

The adorable pint-size private detective returns in Friday Barnes, Under Suspicion. (Her first adventure, Friday Barnes, Girl Detective, came out in January.) The eleven-year-old young woman is still struggling with her boarding school, as she’s not as polished or accepted as the more typical girls. Her disturbingly accurate powers of observation frighten the headmaster, although he benefits when she finds a missing student or solves a historical school mystery. R.A. Spratt’s approach is full of adventure, jumping into events with […]
