JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time Now Widely Available

JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time was a Target-only exclusive beginning in January. Now, the original-to-DVD animated movie will have an official wide release today, May 20. There’s no difference between the two versions, except it now may be easier to find. JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time is a short cartoon movie, running just over 52 minutes. The Justice League — Superman (Peter Jessop), Wonder Woman (Grey DeLisle Griffin), Flash (Jason Spisak), Aquaman (Liam O’Brien), Batman (Diedrich Bader), Robin (Jack DeSena), […]

Manga Editor on Scanlations Then and Now

Justin Stroman interviewed Lillian Diaz-Przybyl, former Tokyopop editor (and co-founder of Chromatic Press), who comments on her history with Tokyopop, why manga isn’t often available legitimately digitally, how online surveys don’t match sales figures, and what publishers can do about scanlation sites. She’s been involved with manga professionally for ten years and longer as a fan, so she’s got a good take on how access to the material has developed, from bootleg tape trading to digital downloading. Here’s one set […]

Flash Trailer Emphasizes Arrow Connections, Character Differences

The first look trailer for the upcoming Flash TV series, starring Grant Gustin, does a great job of hitting three key points: That the show is a spin-off of the popular Arrow, with a prominent role in the ad for star Stephen Amell; that the Flash has superspeed, and it doesn’t look too cheesy on film; and that the characters have a welcome difference in temperament. See for yourself: The five-minute extended trailer gives the Flash more backstory (and a […]

I Kill the Mockingbird

Kids will relate to this YA novel about being assigned summer reading. I Kill the Mockingbird is short — just over 100 pages — and easy to read, although that means a certain lack of depth to the characters. Although they have dramatic events in their backgrounds, it doesn’t make up for how the reader never gets a sense of the cast as real, substantial people. Perhaps that allows for more identification with the kids, imagining themselves as part of […]

Son of Batman (Blu-ray Review)

Son of Batman simplifies the graphic novel written by Grant Morrison into a typical fight movie. We start with Ra’s al Ghul and Talia’s compound being invaded by ninjas on behalf of Deathstroke. That means the movie opens with seven minutes of fighting between groups I don’t care about. The main plot begins when Talia dumps her kid, Damian, on the Dark Knight. The boy is eager to fight and resentful of most else. He’s been raised by the League […]

Andre the Giant: Life and Legend

Review by KC Carlson Andre the Giant: Life and Legend by Box Brown is wonderfully small story about a wonderfully giant man. Andre Rousimoff was born with a rare condition called acromegaly, a syndrome often associated with gigantism. Unfortunately, besides just being large, other symptoms that affected Andre included aging prematurely, his brow and jaw growing more pronounced, and his heart, organs, and joints not being able to keep up with his growth. After finally being diagnosed as a young […]

Dreams Come True! WKRP Complete Series Coming

When I wrote about the complete Hill Street Blues DVD set that came out at the end of last month, I mentioned that I really hoped that Shout! Factory would do a similar set for WKRP in Cincinnati. Ha! I called it! TV Shows on DVD (link no longer available) is reporting that Shout! has “licensed the show’s home video rights and are planning to deliver all four seasons of the sitcom together in one package”. Since the sitcom was […]
