xxxHOLiC Rei Volume 1

I never totally succumbed to the first xxxHOLiC series, but CLAMP (Legal Drug, Chobits) has its fans. I was glad, then, that this relaunch (“rei”, we’re told, means “return”) was comprehensible to the new-ish reader. Sure, if you read previous volumes, there are subtleties between the characters that you’ll notice, but the overall setup — mysterious witch Yuko takes clients and torments the nice young boy Watanuki who cooks for and takes care of her — is understandable enough. More […]

Midnight Secretary Volume 5

In volume 5, Kaya is now working full-time for her vampire boss, but she’s jealous of an old friend spending more time with him, since the friend is also a vampire, and she’s an attractive one. Things get more complicated when the boss’ human brother and vampire mother come for a visit. More background on Kyohei, the boss, fleshes out his character and makes the emotional revelations of this installment more powerful. It’s gripping supernatural soap opera with a sensual […]

There are 57 titles available this year, so there should be something for everyone. Batman: Assault on Arkham Next DCU Animated Movie — Trailer, Orders Now Available

Based on the “world of Arkham Asylum” [the video game], the next original DCU animated movie will be Batman: Assault on Arkham. DC Entertainment has posted the following trailer to YouTube. It’s also available on Son of Batman, out next Tuesday. Harley Quinn (Hynden Walch) features prominently, of course, as do Deadshot (Neal McDonough), the Joker (Troy Baker) with a bomb, and someone who looks like Woody Allen (appearing at 0:49). Maybe that’s the Riddler (Matthew Gray Gubler). Kevin Conroy […]

Bunny Drop Volume 10

I suspect a number of readers may have approached this “bonus volume”, collecting Bunny Drop short stories, the same way I did. I had hopes that it would provide more of the cute “raising a kid unexpectedly” tales that made this series so charming in the early days. I didn’t want to be reminded of the unpleasant change the series took. Unfortunately, Yumi Unita’s authorial decision, to turn Daikichi and Rin from adoptive father and daughter into married couple, is […]

Smut Peddler 2014 Kickstarter in Final 3 Days

There are fewer than three days to go on the Kickstarter for Smut Peddler 2014. The project has raised over $145,000, most of which is going to the creators and contributors in the form of bonuses, over $1,200 each (which are much appreciated). There’s still time to order your preferred format (print or digital) of this outstanding, women-friendly porn anthology. You can see some sample pages in this interview with C. Spike Trotman, guiding force, as well as finding out […]

C2E2: My Wrapup

My last few comic shows have been arts festival-style, focused on artist appearances and their self-created comics, so it was a bit of a shock to attend a much bigger, much louder, more traditional “let’s look at stuff” comic convention in C2E2 2014. I think of these types of shows as similar to Disneyland — people attend to see the sights, whether it’s cosplayers, big booths, celebrities, or presentations of what publishers have coming next. (ICv2 felt similarly: “The nature […]

DC Thinks Comics Are Trading Cards, Only Covers Matter

DC had great success with their “Villains Month” gimmick last year, in which they put out a limited number of 3-D lenticular covers to boost sales and make it seem like their books were in high demand. This is comics, so if a gimmick works, people keep repeating it until it’s beaten into the ground. DC’s doing the 3-D cover thing again next September, this time as a part of “Futures End“, a look into the future of the DCU. […]
