They Wrote a Press Release Just for Me! Retailers Order Giant Days Today

Today’s the comic shop retailer deadline for orders for comics from the January Previews catalog. One of those items is a new miniseries from Boom! Box, Giant Days by John Allison and Lissa Treiman. I don’t know much about it, and I haven’t seen any sneak peeks, but I am in love with the way the publisher is describing it: Going off to university is always a time of change and growth, but for Esther, Susan, and Daisy, things are […]

Today Is Free Comic Book Day 2014!

Today, May 3, is Free Comic Book Day! KC and I will be helping out at the East Side location of Westfield Comics. I hope you’ll come by and say hi! There are 57 titles available this year, so there should be something for everyone. (Note that Free Comic Book Day isn’t free for retailers, so please don’t be greedy, and if your store is having a special sale or event, check to see if there’s something you want to […]

Fangirl

Fangirl is an amazing story, the kind of college experience we all wish we could have. Cath is a fanfic writer, and a good one. She is best known for stories pairing up Simon Snow, boy magician, with his vampire roommate Baz. She used to write with her twin sister Wren, but they’ve been growing apart. Even so, Cath is surprised when Wren declares she’s going to room with someone else as they go off to college. Cath’s first year […]

Best Graphic Novels of 2013

Here’s what I thought were the best graphic novels of 2013, in order, based on what affected, entertained, and enlightened me. For more information on any of the following titles, the links take you to my reviews. (Yes, I’m a month late — but I’d rather post after the year is done than two months early and risk leaving out good books that happened to be published in November or December.) RelishFood carries memory, and in this memoir, Lucy Knisley […]

Smut Peddler Returns for 2014, Submissions Now Open

This is so much fun! C. Spike Trotman and I are again seeking submissions for the women-friendly erotica anthology Smut Peddler. The new volume is planned to publish in 2014. We’ve already invited a number of wonderful ladies to contribute — Trudy Cooper, Danielle Corsetto (with Randy Milholland), Joanna Estep, Jess Fink, Ghostgreen, Polly Guo, Niki Smith, Faith Erin Hicks, Kate Leth, and Jen Vaughn — but there’s room for more. Check out the submission guidelines page and if you’re […]

Friends of Lulu Publication History — I’m Seeking More Newsletters

I’m still unpacking and sorting boxes from last fall’s move, and while organizing the minicomics, I came across my stash of Friends of Lulu materials. As far as I know, these are the official group publications: Three comic anthologies: Storytime (2000?), Broad Appeal (2003), and The Girls’ Guide to Guys’ Stuff (2007) (Neat looking through these and seeing early work by names I adore — Raina Telgemeier, Faith Erin Hicks, MK Reed, Becky Cloonan, and so many more) The 1997 […]

Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong

I sure hope Faith Erin Hicks doesn’t get typecast as only being able to handle teenagers in school because she does such an excellent job with these kinds of stories. I love reading her young people (in such books as The War at Ellsmere and Friends With Boys), but then again, I’d read any work she does regardless of the age of the characters. In Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong, Hicks adapted a story by Prudence Shen (she’s posted online […]

The Adventures of Superhero Girl

You can read Faith Erin Hicks’ Superhero Girl online, but when the book is this pretty, I’d rather hold it in my hands. Some of these strips were previously available in a self-published collection, but The Adventures of Superhero Girl has more of the comics, plus it’s in color. Kurt Busiek’s introduction makes some wonderful points about how a funny superhero story that stands on its own isn’t necessarily a parody — it just seems that way if you read […]
