Dear Ike: Lost Letters to a Teen Idol

One of the cool-but-frustrating things about doing this is that I sometimes get to see really neat things that you won’t be able to. I don’t mean that as a taunt, but as recognition that this animated film/documentary (a fascinating blend) is currently playing film festivals, so the ability to see it is limited. (The filmmaker provided a copy of this for me to check out.) Hopefully, that doesn’t remain the case, as Dear Ike: Lost Letters to a Teen […]

Inherit the Shoes

Inherit the Shoes is a breezy, fast-moving mystery with a Hollywood setting and a sympathetic protagonist. I expected as much — given that author E.J. Copperman has brought out any number of other enjoyable mystery series, including the Haunted Guesthouse series, the Asperger’s mysteries, the Mysterious Detective mysteries, and Agent to the Paws — and I was not disappointed. I did find the book a little slow to get started, as we have to get through necessary exposition setting up […]

Bravo to a Very Late Kickstarter: Reality Check

One of the reasons I have been very pessimistic in the past about Kickstarters and crowdfunding is how some projects never deliver. I’ve got a few on my tracking list that have been there, undelivered, for years. Don’t get me wrong, many people are responsible, but the ones that aren’t are the ones that stick in people’s minds, and poison the well for others. So I want to congratulate Rikki Simons and Tavisha Wolfgarth-Simons. They funded a reprint collection of […]

IDW Has Leadership Challenges

Last month, Chris Ryall announced that he was leaving IDW. He had been some combination of President, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer of the comic publisher for most of the last 15 years. There was a hiatus during some of that, as IDW has had a lot of turnover in their executive staff for the last two years, since founder Ted Adams was replaced. Shortly thereafter, new executives were announced. Ezra Rosensaft become CEO of the holding company (formerly the […]

Thanks, Mike, for Sticking Around — Blogging About Blogging

Mike Sterling, of Progressive Ruin and Sterling Silver Comics, put up a post recently that brought back all kinds of memories. He looks at long-time comic bloggers (a group I am privileged to be part of, having run this site for over 20 years, although I like to think of it as a combination blog/website, since “blogging” feels as a term a little more self-indulgent than I aim for). Mike has been going over 16 years himself, and he’s unique […]

What Will Happen to Free Comic Book Day?

With all that’s going on in the world, and the recommendation that people should avoid groups of more than 50 for the next eight weeks (which means through early May) to avoid infection, the question arose: what does that mean for Free Comic Book Day? Comics’ national holiday, scheduled for May 2 this year, often attracts crowds bigger than that, although not all at the same time. And it’s a big moneymaker for many shops, with sales and guest appearances […]

Captain Marvel Now Available on Home Video

Turns out a lot of people disagreed with me about the Captain Marvel movie — it was a blockbuster success! It made over a billion dollars in ticket sales! And it’s now available for home viewing. Captain Marvel launches today on your favorite digital platform, with the disc version coming on June 11 in either the 4K Cinematic Universe Edition (4K UHD, Blu-ray, and Digital Copy) or a Multi-Screen Edition (Blu-ray and Digital Copy). I’m looking forward to giving the […]

Justice League vs. The Fatal Five

I had high hopes for the newest DC original animated movie, Justice League vs. The Fatal Five. It has two of my favorite DC things: the Legion of Super-Heroes and Jessica Cruz, Green Lantern. Plus, it had an intriguing theme, that of mental health and struggling with invisible illness. (The studio provided a review copy. In addition to the physical media release, the movie can be seen on the DC Universe streaming service. Since they sell access to the digital […]
