Five Years Later Legion Book Cancelled Along With Others

I was looking forward to the rumored hardcover collection of Legion of Super-Heroes: Five Years Later. I have quite a fondness for that run, since it changed my life. Unfortunately, it now appears to have been cancelled, as seen on Facebook. There were a number of announced DC collections cancelled as well, including the Electric Warriors trade, The Joker: Lovers and Madmen, a new edition of Absolute Dark Knight, the third book of Peter David’s Aquaman run, and Flash/Impulse: Runs […]

The Family Trade

I found The Family Trade, written by Justin Jordan & Nikki Ryan and illustrated by Morgan Beem, a fairly standard story about a teen assassin working to save her fantasy world. It’s distinctive only due to its art and coloring. The Free Republic of Thessala, aka the Float, is an independent city-state in the middle of the ocean, a center of commerce and diplomacy. Jessa is a young orphan member of the Family, a loosely related gang of thieves and […]

Well, That Was Quick! Venom Now Available for Home Viewing

Venom seemed like a crazy idea for a stand-alone superhero film, but it’s doing quite well. It’s a top 10 movie in domestic take for 2018, and it shows that Sony/Columbia doesn’t have to team up with Marvel Studios (as they did for Spider-Man: Homecoming) to make an enjoyable Spider-Verse movie. What surprised me was that it became available for digital rental last week and comes out on Blu-ray and DVD tomorrow, December 18. This is unusual because its theatrical […]

Pixar Short Films Collection Volume 3

Now that the feature-length Pixar movies are more focused on sequels and known quantities, the short films are where the most exciting concepts and animation techniques are found, in my opinion. Pixar Short Films Collection Volume 3 has a mix of original ideas and cartoon shorts with Pixar favorite characters. It contains the following, each of which can be played with or without a filmmaker introduction and/or commentary. Bao – by Domee Shi, 2018, shown with Incredibles 2, about a […]

Archie Horror Titles Are Most of Publisher’s Continuing Series, New Titles Announced

Since it’s New York Comic Con weekend, there are plenty of announcements and news about upcoming publisher plans. Archie Comics, for example, announced that 2019 would feature two new Archie Horror miniseries. Blossoms 666 stars the twins Cheryl and Jason. One is the Anti-Christ, but they don’t know which, and both want the role. It’s five issues, with the first due in January. Archie Comics Co-President Alex Segura said, “Cullen really blew us away with his Omen-esque version of the […]

World of Darkness: The Documentary

I’ve never played a role-playing game (RPG), but I’ve always been interested in how people respond to vampires in popular culture, so I was curious to view World of Darkness: The Documentary when offered a screening copy. It’s an hour-and-a-half documentary about Vampire: The Masquerade and White Wolf Publishing, the role-playing game company that released it. World of Darkness: The Documentary will be available in the US for streaming purchase or rental on Amazon, iTunes, and Steam on September 18. […]

2018 Harvey Award Nominees Announced; Schedule Changed

A month ago, the new, radically revised Harvey Awards plans were announced. The nominating committee would select a slate for voting by August 1, and the voting would end August 23. The nominees were announced on August 9, instead, and voting closes September 3 just before midnight Eastern time. (That’s Labor Day this year.) The biggest change, as previously discussed, is getting rid of all the creator awards but adding a movie/TV category as one of the only six categories. […]

DC Cancels Historical Reprint for Content Concerns

In last month’s Previews catalog, DC early-solicited a reprint edition. Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil Deluxe Edition was to be a $50 hardcover collection of stories from Captain Marvel Adventures #22-46, originally published beginning in 1943. This 24-chapter serial, written by Otto Binder and illustrated by C.C. Beck, introduced the evil worm Mr. Mind and was one of the earliest epic superhero stories, running over two years. (Interestingly, there was a movie serial in 1941, The Adventures of Captain […]
