Psychiatric Tales Paperback Adds New Chapters

I really enjoyed Darryl Cunningham’s Psychiatric Tales when it came out a couple of years ago. (His later book, How to Fake a Moon Landing: Exposing the Myths of Science Denial, was released in the US this past spring.) It was originally released in the UK before being reprinted in the US. Now, the paperback edition is out in the UK with 40 new pages, which is made up of two new chapters and new chapter headings. Cunningham explains the […]

Friends of Lulu Newsletters, Volume 1, 1995-1996

I came across these while cleaning up after the move, and I thought I’d share them, for anyone interested. The following links reprint the first year of Friends of Lulu newsletters, “Lulu’s Clubhouse”. (Note that all addresses listed, including my old one, are no longer valid.) They’re quite the time capsule, particularly since the editors (Jackie Estrada and Heidi MacDonald) aimed to cover comic news overall. In the first issue, the Sailor Moon cartoon was announced as coming to US […]

Amazon Begins Publishing Comics With SF Adaptations

Yesterday, Amazon announced that, in addition to their book publishing efforts, they will be publishing comics. Jet City Comics (“jet city” is a nickname for Seattle, where Amazon is headquartered) launched with Symposium #1, a Kindle comic that’s a “sidequest” to the Foreworld Saga, a shared-author alternate history series. Their serialized publications will be available for the Kindle before print collections are sold on Amazon.com and “other comics retailers”. (Will comic shops want to sell them? Bookstores have previously refused […]

Next Geary Murder Treasury to Cover Murder of Stanford White

Due out in October (direct market; December elsewhere) is the next of Rick Geary’s Treasury of XXth Century Murder volumes. This one is Madison Square Tragedy: The Murder of Stanford White. The notorious architect with a taste for young women was involved with showgirl and model Evelyn Nesbit (played by Joan Collins in The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing). Later, after she married protoypical playboy Harry Kendall Thaw, her husband became jealous of her past, driving him to kill […]

EW Releases List of 10 Greatest Graphic Novels With One I’ve Never Heard Of

Last week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly took a summer vacation by skipping out on most of its content and instead running lists of the “All-Time Greatest” movies, books, TV shows, etc. Each medium got a list of 100 items, each with a few sentences of description. It seems like quickly assembled, low-effort discussion bait, meant to increase hit counts as comments debate what was left out. (And as a double issue, that meant no fresh content for two weeks, so […]

The Garlicks Gets Publisher, No Release Date Yet

Last year, I gave Lea Hernandez guff over her failed Kickstarter for The Garlicks, a terrific concept about a family of vampires, including a teen aspiring graphic novelist. This year, she’s back with a publisher. Action Lab Entertainment has announced that they will publishing The Garlicks as part of their all-ages line (of which the best-known title is Princeless). There’s no publication date yet, probably because there’s still work to be done, but the publisher will have a preview available […]

Smaller Publishers Merge: Boom! Acquires Archaia

Yes, that headline is muddled, because whether this is a merger, a joining of forces, or an acquisition depends on which press release you read first. The news is flying around the internet, however, that Archaia Entertainment, originally founded by Mark Smylie over a decade ago to publish his comic Artesia, is being bought by Boom! Studios. Archaia has been known for publishing Mouse Guard and putting out attractive, reasonably priced hardcovers, many of which are European reprints. Their licensed […]

Justice League Products for Kids at Target

After noticing the huge Justice League at Target promotion ad spread for summer products in the last Entertainment Weekly magazine, I had to stop by and check out what they had. The press materials make a big deal out of “inspired by the new 52”, but the images, when used, are clearly the traditional José Luis García-López figures. (He did the look book full of samples well-known for their classic styling.) Here’s a serving tray, for example. It’s nice to […]
